Unclear error message: The specified file was not found!

Hi !

I run the platform for a year now, but suddenly I get an error message after starting the platform. A dialog with a "red X" titled "PortableApps.com Platform" and saying "The specified file was not found."

How can I find out whats going wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Mate, Berlin

No Path?

It should list a path and filename if it can't find the file. If you modified any themes or anything previously, they may break upgrades after.

A fix for this would be to reinstall a fresh version right over the existing one. Download the regular platform installer from our site (Download link above) and run it. Select Custom Path and then select the directory you have the platform installed to. This would be where the Start.exe file is for the platform, often in your portable device or cloud folder's root directory.

No Path!

Exactly, there is nothing more written in the dialog. No Path or filename, and its only after starting the platform. All Apps are working well. I use it via Synology CloudStation transfered on two pcs. I found out the error is only on one machine. Both are running Windows10.

Drive Letter?

Is it mapped to a drive letter? If not, map it to a drive letter and it will work.

FIX minor annoyance

Same problem here ... caused by deleting this file: "C:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\whatsnew.txt" . FIX recreate "whatsnew.txt"

PortableApps.com Shouldn't Be Altered

For future reference, do not alter any files within the PortableApps.com directory unless specifically instructed. The only file that's ever referenced as one that should be altered is the settings INI and only to alter advanced settings that don't yet have a spot in the Options window.

Out of curiosity, why did you randomly delete a 1KB text file?

I had the same problem

I had the same problem Smile yesterday I was looking a recent *.txt file with some of my notes and I got ps off with so many .txt files everywhere (my fault), sincerely never in my life I will read the txt files inside software that I use everyday, with the exception of changelog or readme, nothing bad about portable apps just got in the middle of .net and windows updates or other random soft, the usual txt noise in my search

Anyway why the cryptic error for a txt file?

Should Always Exist

The error is the basic error when Delphi (the language the platform is written in) tries to open a file that doesn't exist. There was no existence check built into that routine because it was assumed users wouldn't randomly delete files within the PortableApps.com folder.

I've added a note to track this and add a check in the next release.
