website temporarily inaccessible

Hello there,

==============
System setup:
OS: Windows 7, 64 bit
Portable Apps Platform: 12.2
McAfee VirusScan / SiteAdvisor / AntiSpyware Enterprise
Windows Firewall
================

Just in the last couple of days when trying to update apps at various times of the day I've constantly been getting the message "The PortableApps.com website is temporarily inaccessible due to maintenance and the app cannot be downloaded". Not had any problem like this in 3+ years using PortableApps.

I've checked the forums & can't find anyone else reporting the problem recently. So conclude it's probably local.

Any help appreciated - thank you,
Jim

Server Error (503)

That shows up when the Updater encounters a "Server Error (503)" when trying to download. This used to happen when SQL backups were run at around 1am NY time before we switched to a better infrastructure. That's no longer the case now. These days, it can be an issue with the local antivirus/firewall. Or the local proxy blocking access.

Is this happening when you try to get the updater database (aka when it's launched and downloading the list of apps) or when you download an app? If when you're downloading an app, what specific app is this happening on?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hi John,

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. It's happening when trying to update apps on launch but also when downloading a new app. As an experiment I just tried downloading two apps - Virtual Magnifying Glass and Pencil Project - and they both failed with same message.

It's only in last couple of weeks this has happened. Before that I didn't have any trouble at all from work or home. I was able to update apps from home last time I tried but not from work so I'll repeat the experiment again from home tonight. I'll also ask my work IT department if there have been any changes to antivirus/firewall/proxy.

Thanks again,
Jim

Checks for IT Department

Is there anything specific I can tell my IT Department to check for? e.g. if a specific port or IP is being blocked. You see I *can* see the site portableapps.com from my work PC. The problems only occur when trying to update or add apps. If I tell them that in order to see the problem they have to download the platform I suspect they wouldn't do so...

Thanks.

update

I was able to update Libre Office Portable and download Pencil Project Portable from home last night. Today I was also able to download PDFTK Builder Portable *from work*. Wonder if there have been any config changes your end?

None

Nothing has changed in the platform or on the server side in 5 months.
