separately downloaded google chrome doesn't install, tries downloading it again.

I have separately downloaded google chrome using the link given on this site.

When I go to install that through app interface - Add new app, and even browse to the downloaded package, it doesn't install,
it tries downloading the entire package again.
and when I abort download, it hangs, the installers gets stuck there and doesn't complete or close.
I have to close it manually.

Couldn't find any way to proceed.

please suggest what to do.

Thanks.

Live Installer

Google Chrome Portable uses a live installer. What you downloaded is just our small part of it. As you install, it downloads the official Google Chrome installer for the corresponding version to pull the Chrome app files from for use in Google Chrome Portable. It's done this way for licensing reasons.

ok. Thanks for clarifying.

ok. Thanks for clarifying.

yeah, it is just a 1.5 MB chrome paf, so it can't be full installer.

And yes, your site did say "Online Installer: This is installer will download Google Chrome during setup."
which I had not read, so not your fault. I am sorry.

Let me find some other standalone, offline installer of chrome. If any member is aware of such a link, please share to help me.

If I don't fine offline installer for it, my goodbye to chrome.

Thanks.

Examining using 7-Zip

If you open up the installer via 7-Zip, you can explore to the App/Appinfo directory and view the installer.ini file. In that file, you'll find the download link for the Chrome full installer (which Google doesn't have publicly available). Download that file (here's a link to 48.0.2564.116) and place it in the same directory as the Chrome Portable installer. The installer will use that during install without needing to re-download.

I'd recommend against using any portable packages of Chrome that include Chrome. They're done 100% illegally and likely have malware within as the two tend to go hand in hand.

opened paf.exe in 7z.

opened paf.exe in 7z.

The folder names are appearing in chinese, so I can't make out App/Appinfo directory.

Seems google is also using chinese products, i.e., chinese software developers.

Thanks.

as you were tellling about

as you were tellling about using a full non-portable chrome installer this way for portable installation, I was already having an earlier version on my box ChromeStandaloneSetup v43.0.2357.130m.exe so I thought to try with that.

however, on extracting that with .7z, it downloaded just a single "102~" file without any extraction.
which in turn is opening in .7z but is not showing even a single file, and no file is extracted from that by 7z though no error is shown either.

the only tip is that the file is showing "Method: LZMA:23" when seen in .exe opened within .7z. Net is showing this to be some Linux thing and not showing any direct utility for w8 to open that. Seems some r&d in tar balls is required, which is strange for me.

Thanks.

SOLVED!

(here's a link to 48.0.2564.116)

The above link given by you worked like a charm.
I downloaded this and put it in the same folder as having paf.exe, then I added chrome paf.exe in your software and it installed pretty well.
it didn't went to download loop as you had said.

Thanks a gig. My issue solved, though I foresee other people seeing this thread and coming to you in future asking to give such direct download links for this method.

Thanks.

for that matter, when google

for that matter, when google is making chrome downloads so intentionally cryptic,
I found on net that google itself provides Chromium as zip file which can be just extracted and used as a browser and there are some minimal differences in chrome browser (has in built pdf viewer and some different flash player) and chromium, so it will do most of the chrome work.

You might wish to explore chromium zip file installation as portable version within your software and share it on forum
so that users can get rid of google's idiosyncrasies and can conveniently use chromium for all practical purposes.

Thanks.

Hello vsrawat,

Hello vsrawat,
welcome to the PortableApps community. I like your enthusiasm for making things better and providing hints and possible solutions. Just... did you know there is a search funktion (even if somewhat limited in functionality). It's found at the top menu. Sometime one might not be the first to have some thoughts. Wink
Chromium f.i. has been discussed ad nauseam and there has been a development test (other word for beta here) for a while but it has been abandoned some time ago.

Abandoned? (Looks like it's still going strong to me.)

I know Aluísio A. S. G. (formerly known as kAlug) hasn't posted a new version of his Chromium Portable (which is actually a fork of Chromium that adds a few extra portability enhancements, plus the launcher, etc.) to PortableApps.com in a while. In fact, AFAICT he hasn't been here at all in a while, but he's still keeping Chromium Portable up-to-date over on CrPortable.sf.net.

Note 1: His version does lag behind Google's occasionally, but it's fully caught up right now.
Note 2: It's a fork from the Dev channel of Chrome, so it's on version 50.0.2657.0 right now.

Enjoy.

You're right. Abandoned it is

You're right. Abandoned it is here, as the last post from his thread was four years old and the download link is dead.
I would call that dead from the PA.c point of view, but it obviously is not. Thanks for clarifying that.
It's a pitty, kAlug has left this community, though. He had takena good part in driving the launcher forward afair.

Agreed.

It would be nice to see him around here again. And just as a personal note: I liked the name kAlug.
