invoke Skype (portable) only on demand ?

I would be using this program only infrequently, and do not like the behavior of installed Skype that it comes up ready to use in the Windows taskbar at every bootup -- in effect already ON and operational: I'd much rather invoke the program only at my discretion, like nearly all other apps. However, I do not notice any setting available in Skype to adjust this behavior.

For this reason, I have downloaded the portable version from here (but have not tried it yet), in the hopes that it would operate in this manner that I prefer. That would be consistent with the behavior of every other .PAF type app that I can think of, and I have quite a few of them here. Their footprint is close to nil, usually with no registry involvement, and Windows is generally not aware of the app at all, until you go to use it. In addition to being able to run the app on any PC off of an attached thumb drive, this is most often a major plus in my estimation.

I'm inquiring here, because I already have a Login here, and Skype forums might just respond with a "this is a portable version issue, take it up with them." I already see how the installed version works . . . .

HI and Welcome to PortableApps

1. I do have also Skype installed locally and you can prevent it from starting at start up. I only launch it when I wish to use it.
Tools option and remove the start with windows.
Check start folder and make sure not there as well

2. You are correct if you use PortableApps version it will only run when you launch it.

I've been using Win-7, and could not readily locate that 'Tools' option or access to the Start folder itself. I recalled that there were utilities like Startup Cop, and equivalents to it in various Win utilities suites, but ended up using Autoruns from the Sysinternals suite, which had a lot more controls and options than I was anticipating. After unchecking appropriate boxes, Skype is no longer starting up automatically at bootup. Had this not proved sufficient, I would have uninstalled it and replaced it with the portable version -- which I may still do. I'm glad that the PAF apps remain dormant and out of the way until summoned.

Sorry

Tools and options was referring to the actual Skype program

The start folder I was referring to was in the Start Menu all programs there are sometimes shortcuts to the program that start otherwise it would have been in msconfig.

Glad to hear you resolved the issue.
