Why is there no program to convert automatically to portable app?

Isn't it possible to make a program that can automatically convert any application in to portable one? There is this U3 service that does it (http://devblog.u3.com/?p=42) however I don't know if they do it manually for every program that people send them or have they got a program that does it automatically.

Because it's Not That Easy

REALLY think about your question.

There are so many variables involved.
If it were that easy, John would have updates to the PorableApps programs the day after the Standard versions updated, and this would be with programs he had already worked with.

Convert ANY application, AUTOMATICALLY!

Think about it. It's really a silly question.
If it's not a silly question than the answer is,
"Because You have not written it yet"

By the way I'm not sure but I think that the site you link to is mostly talking about converting an app that is already pretty portable TO the U3 platform, this is a much easier task.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

It doesn't actually convert

It doesn't actually convert it, it wraps it and intercepts registry and file calls and redirects to the portable device.
Sounds very similiar to what ceedo is doing.

There is

It's called Lapwing and it's in Proof of Concept stage at the moment and might advance if Steve actually works on it Blum

The guy has done an awesome job, give it a try Wink
I am not gonna mention other payware applications as it surely won't help you much if the price you'd have to pay was around $5000.

Yeh

At one point, Steve was going to work with redllar, but I have no idea what happened to that.

Quoting redllar ...

There was a guy from portableapps that I thought was going to update his launcher to make use of this app. But he hasn't responded to my last email letting him know this new version is now available, so I guess he's no longer interested. From the little bit of communication we had, he didn't seem like the right choice to take over things anyway.

Hmm

I'm fairly sure that the full problem was that Lapwing is open-source and JauntePE isn't.
Also, Steve has a problem with doing that, unlike me who replies to almost every email. (I say almost, because I am on several mailing lists)
