Unable to connect to PortableApps.com to retrieve portable apps

HP pavilion, 64 bit, W10
I started with version 12.x, and got the error: Unable to connect to PortableApps.com to retrieve portable apps. Please try again later. [SendRequest Error].
Thinking that may be related to there being version 13.0 available, I downloaded that, and updated my copy; I got the same error.
Next, I installed new copy to flash drive, but still get the same error.
Went to Options, Connections, and change from Automatic to direct connection; now it is working.
Wondering why Automatic did not work

What do you get when you run the "Proxy Get" utility?

There's a little utility John T. Haller wrote … about 10 years ago ( has it really been that long?) that tells you a little bit of information about how your computer appears to be accessing the internet. It's called "Proxy Get", and he posted it over here, then some months later mjcarman posted a patch so it regarding another possible proxy configuration here, and a couple of years ago, in response to w1ckd asking about it, I applied the patch and posted a binary over here. I used TempSend, so it expired after a month, but I've just re-uploaded it so you try using that. Tell us what it says, and it might shed some light on why the Platform is having difficulty connecting to PortableApps.com.

Misconfigured Internet Connection Settings in Windows/IE

Automatic uses the settings you have for Windows and IE. Direct just makes a direct connection. If automatic fails, that means Windows/IE is misconfigured. You can check the settings in Control Panel - Internet Properties - Connections. And then LAN settings (if you have LAN on modern Windows) or similar on older Windows. This exact screen and set of steps varies by Windows version.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Misconfigured Internet Connection Settings in Windows/IE

In connections, I went to Lan settings, and found that "Use automatic configuration script" was checked, with the following script link: http://127.0.0.1:8445/okayfreedom.pac
It has been some time since I tried OkayFreedom; it was never able to connect to its server, and I removed it; obviously, some traces were left behind.

I am currently updating my PAP, and it is stuck on Libre Office; it is about 2/3 through install, and has not changed for hours. I have tried to stop the installer, but it is still stuck. I may need to restart the computer. Libre Office is 31 of 76 updates; downloads have completed, this is install.
Thanks for your help

Is there an error? Did you close the Platform?

If there's an error in the installation (e.g. can't write a file) the installer will stop and show an error and the PortableApps.com App Directory (Updater) will wait for it till you close the individual app's installer.
Similarly, if you close the PortableApps.com Platform, then the installers won't run in silent mode any more, so they will sit there asking you to 'Next' through each installer to install each App individually. (if you close your Platform in the middle of a big series of updates/installs, you can open it back up to get the rest of the installs/updates to run silently)

That'll do it.

Ah, yes. That'll cause it to wait too.

Thanks for coming back to let us know what the cause really was.
