Just curious

this is not a criticism, were you able to get a hold of the developer? I tried to contact hm t get permission for this about 6 months ago and was basically told NO

I tried

I also tried, or at least I wrote down that I tried in my devlog. I never received any response, and the only thing I could find on the website was a prohibition against reverse engineering and such found here. So, as far as I can tell, I can release this for testing, but not as an official app (because it's closed source freeware). If it ends up that I have to take this down, then I will.

Permission

Without permission, you can't bundle a freeware app unless the license explicitly permits it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Okay then

I guess this page will go on hiatus for now then. I'll take down the links momentarily (as well as the actual files).

Not a problem

I'm glad you brought it up because it sparked other parts of the conversation that lead me to create the online installer version (which I'm trying to post to MediaFire but it's being special right now). So I actually thank you for pointing that out. Part of the process is learning what went wrong, right?

Freeware

As this is freeware, it must be in an online installer format, unless explicit permission has been received from the publisher to bundle it, or the license terms permit bundling.

In this case, there are no terms permitting bundling. See here for the terms governing this app.

...oh right

I completely forgot about online installers. I'd have to experiment with them before I'd be comfortable re-releasing this in that format. Thanks for the reminder.

Confused about the Copyright Statement

Hello, I just download the software from the site and opened the help file and looked at the license portion. Based on what I read, I would feel that it could be bundled. But I a little new to the copyright thing. Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks salavine

I was actually trying to find the license for this program in specific (instead of the generic terms of use on the website as referenced above). Apparently I can't read too well, and never saw this in the helpfile. It does seem to imply (especially the "publish" and "distribute" parts of the clause) that I would bundle this if I wanted to. Until I get confirmation by one of the admins, and hopefully one day by the original developer, I'll stick to the online installer to make sure that I'm staying on firm legal ground. Thanks again for finding that!

Another Bat2Exe - Open Source

Here is another Bat2Exe converter that happens to be open source. Not sure how it compares. Just found it.

2.1.4.0 released

Note: If you remove the MD5 in the installer it will automatically download the latest version.

Version 2.3.2 Ready!

Couldn't get the above version to install. Appears as though it was having trouble downloading the app. So I downloaded it from the developer's site and gave it a go. Works. So I put it into PAF format and have it ready to go but need a place to host it. SourceForge only takes open source. This app is Freeware and licensed to be freely distributed. So as soon as I can get it online ...

Not trying to be rude, but

Not trying to be rude, but the usual process when an app already exists is to ask in the original thread and give the developer a bit of time to respond (a few weeks would be polite) before just jumping in and taking something over.

Sometimes developers do just forget about something they've said they were going to update, sometimes links do erode without the developer realizing etc.

Also, this app is (license-wise) very touchy ground. The creator uses the MIT license (open source) but the program isn't open source. Sometimes it is better to just stay away from apps with conflicted licenses like this. I'm not trying to stop you, just saying that there is the small chance of it leading to bad stuff later on, so please be careful (or consider an online installer as is in this thread, which can be posted to SourceForge).

Not Attempting to Preempt Anybody

Put it together as an exercise since the copies I was able to download would install. Apparently it wouldn't download the app. I will let it go for now and just use it for myself. Have been toying with another app that is Open Source so will see about packaging it.

Update: Bat2Exe Portable is up. See https://portableapps.com/node/53200. This is a simplistic app but does work.

Hiatus

I have been on hiatus from doing PA.c stuff for a while now because of various life things. I'm not sure when I will be able to return to packaging. I am encouraging people who wish to take over the programs to tell me and then do so. I want to see these apps get the respect they deserve.
