Compact folders fails

Lately, everytime TBP asks if I want to compact my my folders, and I click OK to start the process, it comes back a few moments later with the message "Some folder (e.g. 'Inbox') cannot be compacted because there is not enough disk space. Please delete some files and try again."

I have 29.1GB free on my USB drive. What more do I have to delete to allow the compact to succeed?

TEMP and errors

I'd suggest scanning the drive in question for errors and ensuring that your drive where TEMP is located has enough free space to start.

I assume by scanning the drive you meant running CHKDSK on the removable drive. If that's correct, I did so, and it reported 0 bad sectors.

Does the compact process use the TEMP folder on the computer's C: drive? My C: drive has 176 GB free.

Portable

Those are the only two things that would affect the portable version specifically. So, it's not a portable issue, it's a Thunderbird issue. This message pops up all the time and it has nothing to do with the amount of disk space you have free. It's a Thunderbird bug. Try moving folders around. Try compacting only a handful at a time, etc.

Okay, I'll try your suggestions. Is there a way to turn off the prompt to compact folders that pops up after I've deleted a few items?

also try SpeedyFox and similar

you may also find SpeedyFox (available nearby) or similar third party compactors useful in a case like this BUT make sure you have a backup first as your TB is possibly unstable
