portableapps keeps corrupting mousepad driver

~

For the past year or so I've been getting the following error...

This only happens when portableapps is plugged in.

Doesn't matter which browser I use.

Happens about 60% of the time I use it.

Mousepad driver only returns after I reboot the machine.

I've put up with it for now, but I'm getting fed up with it and am now saying something about it. Any idea what's going on?

Drive or USB port

Most likely, it's your drive or USB port. Software on Windows can't cause a mouse driver to crash on its own unless there's an issue with the mouse driver itself or the hardware. Nothing in our software ever even re-positions the mouse let alone does anything with the driver.

I'd suggest first ensuring that you have the most up to date drivers. Unfortunately, most laptop manufacturers never bother to update the drivers so you're stuck with a buggy older version. Particularly on typical consumer-level laptops (read: not the manufacturer's high end machines which often have better driver support).

After that, I'd suggest not using that drive and using something else. If it still fails, try another port.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Well here's something interesting. I went back, backed up all my data and re-formatted the drive from exFAT to fat32 and have not had an issue with it since.

I've had some problems using the exFAT format in flash drives before, so I had a hunch this might be it. exFAT doesn't seem as compatible-friendly with as many things as you would think
