Not Saving Personalization

Since updating to version 14.2 the theme which I have changed PortableApps to is not saving. I move between two different computers frequently throughout the day, my personalization settings are not traversing the two computers or saving between moves. PortableApps keeps starting the the default grey theme no matter which machine it is starting on.

It is also continuously bringing up the 14.2 update notes and donation request each time PA starts.

Any ideas?

Improper Exit

When that happens, it means that it's unable to save its settings. It does this on exit. If you shutdown Windows without exiting the PA.c Platform, Windows just kills the process. If you unsafe eject the drive, it can't save either.

As to the donation request, it should in theory be saving that as soon as you click OK on it. If it's not, you could have some corruption on your drive preventing saving as well.

Drive Corruption

I'm curious about the corruption, now that you mention it. I always use the eject function in Windows after using the "X" button in PA to close it because I'm rather critical about file access errors. However, ONE of the computers I use the drive on ALWAYS flags the drive for having errors and does a scan, the other computer does not, so I just figure it is a fluke on this machine.

Is there a file or folder I need to check for consistency to verify if what PA needs is there or working as intended?

Thanks for such a quick response, John. Wasn't very expected as this isn't necessarily a critical error - more cosmetic than anything. I am sure if it was chronic there would have been lots more post since the update. Smile

Sorted Out

Alright, John. I seem to have gotten this sorted out.

After trying to open some other option on the PortableApps menu it gave me a file access error for some ini file in %PAroot%\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data. Upon attempting to check this file the only thing I had marked "Data" in the directory tree was a file, apparently the Data directory had been wiped.

So, after trying to re-install multiple times, I finally had to delete the PortableApps launcher and the PortableApps.com directory before the installer decided to do a "clean install" and restore the directory tree. Everything is working just peachy now!

How about a PortableApps system file integrity checker/repair tool? Just an idea! Wink

Thanks for the help, as always.

Corruption

Drives having corruption when they're always safely ejected is rare. If it does happen, it's often due to either a failing drive or a faulty USB port. File integrity checks won't fix that. In your case, that Data directory likely still had corruption. If any of the platform's files themselves had been corruption it wouldn't start. So checking file integrity wouldn't have helped there either, unfortunately. You can manually trigger a drive error check from the platform, which would at least let you know of the issue.

I'd suggest being a bit wary of either your drive or one of those PC's ports. Backups are your friend for a while.
