Request: Epic Browser

Program: Epic Browser

License: Unknown

Description:

(from Wikipedia)
Epic is a web browser based on Mozilla Firefox developed by Hidden Reflex specifically customized to the taste of Indian users, which was released in July 2010. Similar to Flock, the browser has several preinstalled widgets such as social networking, chat clients and email facilities integrated into the browser. It is dubbed as the first web browser from India and also features the first integrated virus protection in a browser powered by ESET.

(Although I am not a Indian, the browser looks like decent. I hope you can help me to make this browser as a portable app.)

Other: Epic creates user settings in %APPDATA% and cache in %LOCALAPPDATA%, just like Firefox.

Please help.

Bad Idea, Insecure/Outdated Firefox Base

Epic is a highly modified version of Firefox, mostly modified with bits that can be added with extensions. It's supposedly modified for 'Indian tastes', though I'm not sure that's based on anything other than the publisher's ideas.

Unfortunately, Epic's current version was last updated in February and based on Firefox 16.0. This version of Firefox has known security issues and should no longer be used. As such, I wouldn't recommend this browser for portable packaging or for anyone to actually use outside of testing in a controlled environment. It definitely shouldn't be used for production use.

Honestly, there are so many Firefox and Chrome variants these days that there's almost no advantage to us packaging most of them.

Changed...

Apparently, the last update is more recent than that, and is now based on Chromium and the last post of the forums is about 9 days old today... so there might have been some big chnges, in the meanwhile...

Still Outdated

They switched, but they're still months behind Chromium/Chrome's official releases, which means they're still insecure. This is pretty standard for most Chromium and Firefox forks.

PortableApps.com Must have this Browser

The PortableApps.com have large quantity of Portable Apps.
The Maximum user want all those apps as portable which takes much time to install and this Browser takes much time to install for those who don't have the good bandwidth, in these days in india the many indian users don't have much good bandwidth as wanted for these apps and also specifically customized to the taste of Indian users.
So,
That's why PortableApps.com Must have this Browser as Portable.

Epic is using Chromium 40 at the moment, which was released 8 months ago in March. So, there are a ton of security vulnerabilities that haven't been patched. The bottom line is that Epic Browser appears to be insecure and should not be used at present.

It's now 2016. Is Epic Browser secure now?

I too would be very interested in a portable version of Epic Browser.

As it is, Epic Browser CAN be installed on a computer where you don't have administrator privileges, but it installs all the files at C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local, and I cannot find a way to have it install on a USB drive instead.

Any new information on the portability of Epic Browser (not to mention any lingering security issues) would be appreciated.

Always Behind, Insecure

Epic is *always* far behind Chrome/Chromium so it is insecure by its very nature. I wouldn't touch it, personally.

Current Chrome version: 53.0.2785.143
Current Epic version: 48.0.2553.0

Based on that version, it looks like it was branched from a Dev version on Chromium back in November of last year. *11* months ago. Keep in mind that Chrome has had security vulnerabilities patched more than monthly since that time.

If that's the case, you absolutely positively shouldn't even glance at it sideways let alone use it as your browser on the public internet. If that's the case and you've been using it, there's a very high likelihood that your PC is compromised.
