Stop extension updates in Firefox Portable

I cannot find this in the Mozilla forums. My problem is that I use an extension that in the recent versions do not work the way I want it to, whereas not so recent versions work just fine. But of course Firefox want to update the extension - so how do I turn this off for this extension?
And yes, I've taken this up with the extension creator(s) but there they blame Firefox.
Windows 7, Firefox Portable 49.0.2

Turn off update per-extension

According to the comments here, It should be possible to turn off updates on a per-extension basis:

  1. Go to Tool -> Addons
  2. Click on "more" link at the end of the add-on description
  3. Set to "off"

I have done that but the

I have done that but the extension update page always come up with the "Include in update" box is always checked, even if the actual extension's setting "Automatic updates" is set to off.
This is quite annoying as I do not want the extension to update but stay with the current version, so any tips on how to achiev this?

Auto-check

Turning off auto-update doesn't turn off auto-check for updates. There's a config setting which you can toggle to turn off auto-check. It's been a long, long while since I looked at it, so I don't remember offhand the exact name. Other than testing it I didn't use it since I actually wanted to be "notified" of the availability of extension updates and then decide if I wanted to update.

Go to about:config and search

Go to about:config and search for 'extension'. Somewhere there you will find it from what I remember. Yes, Firefox is to blame. They purposely make it this way to force people to upgrade add-ons, otherwise they disable them.

Rant: I would love to see stats on how many folks are truly infected from enabling old extensions, even Flash and Acrobat. If a user is savvy enough to go in and stop updates and enable "vulnerable" plug-ins/extensions, they know what they are doing. Every time I help friends/family with malware infections, they have a full anti-virus and/or security suite installed, everything automatically up-to-date, never do anything as an Administrator, but still get a "virus" anyway because they don't understand technically what's going on. (And I'm not saying they should have to understand, but that's a whole other rant. And it's not just Windows, last year I got two calls for Macs.) I'm sure there's a small percentage out there who benefits, but the main reason I think virus incidents have gone down is because Google warns of possibly infected sites. (But of course when they misidentify your site as infected, there goes your business, again a whole other rant.)

Have been snooping around in

Have been snooping around in about:config but cannot see where I may disable the updating of single add-ons/extensions. This concerns Fast Dial (http://www.userlogos.org/extensions/fastdial) which occurs in 11 lines in about:config but which of them that has to do with updating the extension is not immediately obvious to me - so, any hints?
