Updating Chrome deletes Extensions

Chrome updates delete my extensions using the PortableApps Platform deletes my extensions. This shouldn't happen.

Are you logged into your Google account within Chrome? You must be for extensions to work in the portable version. That's been the case for about 2 years if you ever move PCs or change the path. There is a chance that something changed in the latest releases and this affects version upgrades as well.

Chrome Portable is only *just barely* mostly portable. Chrome is purposely designed not to be portable and to lock itself to a specific PC. The Windows version is almost absurdly heavy (an installed version of Firefox x64 is 100MB. An installed version of Chrome x64 is 400MB). And the settings and profile system is convoluted and difficult to work with compared to something like Firefox which purposely has code to assist with portability and whose developers are receptive to bug reports regarding portable issues.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Difficult?

@John T. Haller:
Chrome use two folders that differ depending on what version you run: stable, beta, canary. One holders the software and the other the user profile.
(stable)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data
or
(Canary)
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS\Application\chrome.exe
C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome SxS\User Data

It should be easy to redirect the folders correctly and you shouldn't have to be dependent on chrome sync a la google/NSA spy program.

Besides portableapps is the last resort in my opinion because it's so unstable and buggy. It's so buggy you can get data loss which is a very critically serious bug.
Just ran into a bug today that caused data loss.

@Apple Dumpling Gang:
You could try this: You could even protect the profile by temporarily renaming it. Update. Let the new version run once than delete the new empty profile and rename back the other profile.

Although with Chrome, portableapps may not be to blame. Chrome likes to delete stuff left and right without the user's permission in the name of "security" which is of course bullshit and a very bad excuse for removing user data. Extensions is considered user data because the user installed it.

There are a few portable chromium browsers out there.
When I needed to use one I used "SRWare Iron" https://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_download.php
It have a usb-stick portable version, had no problems with it. Do mind, running chrome on usb is slow but it's portable on the harddrive as well. Good for long browser sessions and less deterioration of the usb stick. (Flash memory goes bad after enough reads and writes and chrome LOVES to read and write. Lots of old bugs reported that Google refuse to fix even though they are still happening.). When you need to leave the computer just move the iron folder back to usb stick. That's how I did it.
Did never experience a data loss with Iron.

I'm sure there are other portable browsers by now.

Best thing is to look for software that support portability natively.
