Other Note:
I can compile a GTK x86 version but it's not stable to use. If you want to support it let me know. I will give you the information on how to compile it.
Hi mwayne, thanks for reactivating this. I still use 0.10.3.0 locally installed because it is the last version that includes the FDK AAC encoder I need to keep the size of recorded TV series down (HE-AAC).
It's really great to have the portable version at hand to figure out, what new updates can do.
I'll check it out later this weekend.
I'm glad to see this in a dev test - I've had it on my radar for
monthssigh, let's be realistic, years, and just hadn't packaged it yet.I'll check it out in the near future as well!
mwayne,
Your applications are killers!
Thank You.
Far from portable but great to test things. I can use my installed old version and test the new one. It is pointless to use it portably because it requires .NET 4.6, I had to install even on my well maintained Win 8.1 system. But as an alternative "installation" it's just what I needed. (I'm glad to have my old version though, the new one feels less capable somehow).
It seems to deal with leftovers, I found nothing suspicious.
Thanks for your work-
I've just released a self-compiled HandBrake 64-bit GTK version, so it removes the need to install .NET. The user base of HandBrake is 10%/ 90% of 32-bit to 64-bit that it shouldn't be a huge issue. As always this is not supported by the HandBrake Development Team.
Not working for me, disc is scanned but no title available so unable to proceed, I'm guessing due to copy protection. Read here http://www.lifehacker.co.uk/2014/02/21/rip-dvd-computer that you need to install libdvdcss and place it in the program file to avoid the copy protection in the regular version so tried placing it in your program file but still no use.
Thank you for doing it a NET free version.
I am not sure why you are having problem with x86 systems as the only place the .Net is supposed to be used is with UI. Please drop me a line, I might look into it. Just to let you know, I have not done any C++ programming for few years.
Update base app
Hello mwayne, HandBrake supports portable mode by having
portable.ini
in$CWD
Merged in d1376ab
To add to the above - it appears as though using portable.ini in the base app's directory in AppDir, it is possible to redirect settings to PAL:AppDir using the app's storage.dir setting
Update base app
Note: New data handling with portable.ini. If you want to use you old data just copy the data from Data/HandBrake into Data/storage/HandBrake.
They also dropped 32-bit support.
Add GTK self-compiled version 1.1.0 without .NET.
Upload source with modifcations and include compile instructions in BUILD file.

Thank you for working on this - Handbrake would be an excellent addition to the Portable Apps library!

Update base app
Hi mwayne, thanks for the update. Seems they stopped support for all Windows versions below Win 10. It works on my Win8.1 machine but crashes once in a while when using some functions.
And HandBrake now requires .NET 5 desktop version.

Do you think this app is ready for release? Since PortableApps.com has released the first .NET app, paint.NET I think that this could be.
If the .NET 5 runtimes are bundled like with paint.net, yes. paint.net includes the .NET 6 runtimes so it works on Windows 8.1/10/11 out of the box and on Windows 7 once the Platform Update For Windows 7 is installed (requiring admin rights). If the runtimes aren't bundled, you'd need admin rights to manually install .NET 5 on every PC you want to run Handbrake Portable on, which means it's not very portable. Unlike .NET Framework 4.8 which is bundled with all modern versions of Windows going forward .NET 5 and 6 are a continuation of .NET Core 3.1. They're not .NET Framework and will not be bundled with Windows.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Additionally, Handbrake from Version 1.5.x and up requires .NET 6 and stopped working on Windows below 10. Version 1.4.x just had a warning message but was still usable on older Windows but from 1.5.x it simply refuses to start (just a message, that older Windows is not supported anymore).
It's a pity as I use it on different machines while the one I use mainly for video editing and recompressing only has Win 8.1...
Maybe I try to update this old beast, but it requires a fresh windows installation - at least, no idea if all hardware is supported (old MSI gaming notebook and win 10 updates failed the last year).
At some point we'll start accepting apps that no longer run on Windows 7. Windows 10/11 market share is around 70-80% from most stats I've checked. Second place is Windows 7. And Windows 8.1 is a distant third with XP and Vista trailing along with 8.0.

Have you tried if the GTK version is running on Windows below 10?
I just fired it up and encoded a 30 minute video in Windows 7 x64 without issue.

Yes, I use it as fallback on my portable drive when I come across a Win 7 PC with incomplete .Net support (most of our schools machines ).
I don't like the interface, though - longer ways to some settings, many more clicks, no simple file dropping, no independent windows (normally I have the cue open all the time). And the settings format is not interchangeable with the .Net version.
But it is really, really nice to have when I encounter older and not .Net "empowered" PCs.
Handbrake 1.6.0 is out.
mwayne, would you be interested in maintaining a Handbrake GTK Portable release on an ongoing basis? We could release it with a notice that it's not supported by the publisher. That way at least there'd be a portable version of it people can use.
