[Closed] Updater fails without giving errors

It's been days since my 3 portableapps platforms, all hosted in my system drive, fails to update.

Every time I go on with the update wizard it proceed downloading the apps, then it skip directly to the end of the operations very fast. And every time it doesn't do nothing, so that I'm stucked.

I tried with a fresh installation of the platform but when I try to download and install an app it just do the same and nothing happen.

The problem seems related to the updater tool, cause if I download the apps directly from the website they install correctly.

Windows Components Issue?

Can you download the apps within Internet Explorer on this PC? The PA.c Platform uses Windows' networking components. If those are broken, IE won't work either. Additionally, are you using a software firewall of some sort? Can you copy out the install and try it on another PC to determine whether it's specific to your PC vs your network or software you use on every PC?

Windows Components Issue?

1- Downloading apps from IE works
2- I'm not using any third party firewall, just the windows firewall
3- I plugged a usb with a copy of the portable directory in a coworker notebook on the same network and it worked just fine!

Windows Components Issue?

If the same installation works on another computer, then that indicates that the problem is within your own computer, i.e. something in your OS/other Software is blocking the access to the PortableApps updates.

Corporate PC?

Is this a corporate PC? If you download one of the live installers and run them, do they fail similarly? For example, if you grab Google Chrome Portable's installer from our app directory on the site and download it and run it, the installer will live download Chrome from Google as you install. It uses the same methods as the platform's updater/app store.

Live Installer Specifically

Please try a live installer specifically like Google Chrome Portable. Not just regular apps.

Live Installer Specifically

I already tried with Google Chrome Portable, did it again today changing directory and they work just fine. There must be something about administrator privileges. It changed probably due to some windows update, cause lots of apps on my pc started to ask me for admin privileges (e.g. Franz, Slack)

Windows Version, Install Path, etc

Could those affected please include details on their Windows version, 32-bit vs 64-bit, full install path, new install vs upgrade, etc,? Also, could you please temporarily install a fresh install of the platform directly to your Desktop directory and try to download and install a couple of apps that are failing for you. Something is interfering with the actual download on your system. The process which the updater uses to download is the same it's been for about 5 years with a single exception, if your machine is set for that oddball IE zone warning setting when you switch from HTTPS to HTTP, the updater will temporarily turn that off and then back on. Is that setting set on your machine?

Windows Version, Install Path, etc

Here you go:

- Windows 10 x64 Home edition
- installa path: "I:\4Portable" (moved from system drive C, it didn't worked in there neither)
- fresh install on desktop: failed to install any app (tried more than once with different apps, chrome included) - PS all apps fail tu update/fresh install
- I turned off every IE warning (on IE security zone settings) and got nothing still

Seems to me that the downloads are just fine, but when it switch from download to install it just skip directly to the end of the process without any warning

TEMP

Please close the platform and create a directory called TempForPortableApps in the same directory that contains Start.exe. So if Start.exe is in I:\4Portable, please create I:\4Portable\TempForPortableApps . This will bypass your PC's TEMP directory and use a fresh one just for the platform. If they're downloading OK but not running, there could be an issue with your TEMP directory.

Solved!

That's it!!
I'm gonna use this workaround to solve this issue once and for all, then maybe I'll try to find out more about the Temp folder issue.
Thank you very much

Cool, TEMP permissions

Cool, that solves it for now on this PC.

I'd suggest figuring out the TEMP issue as you wouldn't want it to bite you with any other apps you happen to run outside the PA.c Platform (all apps run from the platform will share the custom TEMP we did before). Open Windows Explorer, right click on your PC's name in the left, select Properties, click Advanced system settings on the left in the new window, click the Advanced tab in the System Properties window, click the Environment Variables button at the bottom. In the top list, TEMP and TMP should be pointing to C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\Local\Temp. In the bottom list, TEMP and TMP should be pointing to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Unless you customized them, of course.

Back to Windows Explorer, right click on the directory from the top list (your user's TEMP) and select Properties then select the Security tab. Under group or user names, you should see SYSTEM, yourself, and Administrators listed, all with Full control specified below. If not, make the necessary changes. Now head over to the system's TEMP directory and right-click, properties, Security. You'll need to click Advanced and then continue by default usually. You should see Administrators, SYSTEM and CREATOR OWNER set to Full Control and then Users set to Special. You should be able to fix the first 3 if they are different. The last one, I'm not sure how to set it to special if it's not, so you may have to Google a bit.

TEMP permissions

I moved my Temp and TMP folders to a customized location, before that I removed a redundant user profile (something like "defaultuser00", don't remember the name) that actually change my user account on the pc to the windows online account (don't know why). As of now all the permissions are right and the platform works just fine without the portable temp folders!

I marked it closed as a bug. I didn't mark it Fixed since we didn't fix anything on our end.
