media crashing tabs/browser Firefox Portable 55.0.3

I have a brand-new, fresh instance of Firefox Portable 55.0.3 running on a Windows 10 Pro machine. All antivirus is disabled for testing.

Steps to repro:
1. Visit a site like:
https://soundcloud.com/samplephonics/samplephonics-909-garage-demo?in=sa...
2. Start playback of the media file and quickly click to skip ahead/around the media.
3. Watch as Firefox Portable 55.0.3 tabs crash (and sometimes the browser itself crashes).

I have been seeing this behavior on a variety of media-focused sites since the 55.0.3 update occurred. These tab/browser crashes do not occur in the desktop version of Firefox 55.0.3 on the same machine, only the Portable version.

OK - Firefox Portable 55.0.3

OK - Firefox Portable 55.0.3 is literally unusable.

I've got a fresh, brand-new instance. I visit YouTube, try to watch a video - bang! The tab crashes. I try to reload the tab and look at a list of videos - bang! The tab crashes. I go to SoundCloud - bang! The tab crashes.

I visit the same sites in standard desktop Firefox, and there are no tab crashes.

What is going on??!!

Fine Here, Drive

I fired up a fresh Firefox Portable 55.0.3 and loaded up your soundcloud link in one tab, the first YouTube video in the next, and then CNN's top story video in the next. All three worked without issue when skipping around.

Have you tried installing a fresh copy of Firefox Portable right to your desktop directory? This will help determine if it's your drive or not. Also, have you tried it on another PC? It's possible some drivers on your PC aren't playing well with the new release. Sometimes, some graphics drivers, particularly bad laptop ones, aren't properly blacklisted by Firefox and it doesn't switch to turning off GPU acceleration automatically.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

resolved

FYI - this issue is no longer occurring in Firefox 57.0.4.
