Rename

To stop the platform updating any app, rename the folder. So rename FirefoxPortableESR to FirefoxPortableESROld. Firefox itself will still tell you its out of date.

I would suggest staying with Firefox ESR's current version. If you're worried about losing XP support of support for old-style extensions, that will all work through April 2018.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I think it's still possible

I think it's still possible to trigger the update even though by renaming the FirefoxPortableESROld directory
I would like to know if it is possible to disable permanently the automatic and manual updates

Firefox Portable vs Firefox

The above instructions stop Firefox Portable from looking for updates through PortableApps.com
To stop Firefox itself from looking for updates, follow the instructions here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-stop-firefox-making-automatic-c...

Probably can't

From a quick Google I don't think you can disable manual updates (without downloading, modifying, and rebuilding the source code).

Block forced updates from Mozilla

After discovering there is a problem with Mozilla/FF forcing updating even when you have auto updates set to never, the consensuses elsewhere is;

1. Don't click Help/About to check for the version number. Use "about:support" typed in the address bar instead. Checking the version number the typical way apparently triggers the update.
2. Mark the "Updates" folder as read only (I found it already was),
3. Rename the three files; updater.exe, updater.ini & updater-settings.ini under Apps/Firefox64 & Firefox,
4, Block these domains, either in the hosts file and/or in your Router;
mozilla.org,
download.cdn.mozilla.net,
aus5.mozilla.org
download.mozilla.org

All of the above came from far more knowledgeable people than myself, and equally pissed off! After confirming there was a problem and after doing the above this hasen't updated. It's probably overkill, but I don't need to waste another 2-3 hours re-tweaking the browser because of Mozilla forcing out any add-ons (specifically, Classic Theme Restorer & Tab Mix Plus) that retain classic look & function.

I will update when I feel I'm ready to or there is a obvious need to do so, not when some minor update that gets a full version number comes out ever since Chrome-Dome, Opera and Mozilla starting playing mind games with the full version number updates. I felt that way 18 years ago and I still do.

Updates:

One of the 1st things I do when I add or install a program is to turn off updates. And as far as security, I haven't been unable to recover from a attack yet, there are other ways of securing a computer. Beside, new isn't away better. In fact it rarely is, especially when long standing features are dropped for 'gimmicks' as it has been with Opera & Firefox.
