autorun

I know this has been discussed; I am puzzled by the discussion. I notice that the official PortableApps launcher installs an autorun.inf in root. I can't get it to be seen and acted upon. What am I missing here? I can't imagine this would be so hard to adjust, even if XP is not friendly to the idea (clearly, the U3 folks dealt with this).

The file "autorun.inf"

The file "autorun.inf" doesn't work on USB drives...

U3 drives work because one part of the storage "pretends" to be a CD where "autorun.inf" works. This "virtual CD" (I think it's invisible to the user) then starts whatever application on the "main" USB drive...

There seem to be some workarounds available but all of them require to be installed on the host PC...

All you can do with the "autorun.inf" is to select an icon for your stick and a default action (pop-up when XP recognizes the stick)...

My "autorun.inf" looks like this:

[autorun]
ICON=PStart\Cruzer.ico
OPEN=PStart\PStart.exe
ACTION = PStart 2.09 USB

This setup works for me (using XP SP2)...
Please notice that the paths in "ICON" and "OPEN" may not contain spaces!

It DOES work

The file "autorun.inf" doesn't work on USB drives...
autorun.inf DOES work on USB drives, it just does not launch anything when the drive is inserted (like U3 does), on USB drives it works just a little different.

autorun.inf

It does work in USB drives, it also in hard drives. You can change the icon of hard drives and USB drives, also, when I place my USB disk (with U3 removed) windows shows a dialog in which I may choose to launch portable apps or do nothing

To the both of you...

To the both of you...

Didn't I just write that?
Windows doesn't run anything, but the icon and default action can be configured...

But this guy quite clearly asked for a way to automatically run something on inserting the USB stick, which is not possible with "autorun.inf"...

Please read my entire post before complaining...
Now on to more important things...!

It's not possible to autorun an application from an USB stick WITH the "autorun.inf" or WITHOUT installing some third-party software on the host PC.

You CAN change the icon and the default action (in WinXP) using "autorun.inf".

That's strange. The first time that I had PortableApps on my USB drive it autoruns. Everytime after that, no autorun.
