Temp File Location

Hello, I use portable apps on several machines at work. I have found that my user preferences are saved on the machine and not on the stick. I thought one of the purposes of portable apps was to be able to take your customized apps wherever you go. I find myself re-configuring and reinstalling addons every time I attempt to use one. Am I missing something? Is there a way to have the apps store the user prefs on the stick?

Thanks!

PortableApps.com Apps

All officially released apps in the app directory keep everything self-contained. Some will temporarily store things in the registry or APPDATA on the local machine but move it back when you exit. As long as you safely eject after closing all your apps, nothing is left behind. The platform will automatically handle that for you to if you select the option to.

If you encounter an app that does leave something behind, be sure to file a bug report. What apps are you experiencing this for?

Apps obtained from elsewhere, particularly ZIP files, are sometimes either semi-portable (either some or a lot of things break) or not portable (store settings locally).

Apps I am Using

Primarily I am using Blender. Blender has many, many things to configure and many third party add-ons. I find myself having to add them back on again and again when I'm on a new machine. Also it creates a temp file in Users/Me/AppData/Roaming which remains after I eject. I'm using Windows 7 and the PortableApp.com platform to launch and eject. The other app I've used is PDF-XChange Editor. It does the same thing.

Launching and Associating

How are you launching the app? Only via the platform/BlenderPortable.exe? Did you associate Blender with files so you can double click them to open in Explorer?

Launching and Associating

I'm launching from the platform and I have not associated any files with Blender through Windows Explorer.

AddOns?

Blender Portable itself is contained and doesn't leave anything behind. What addons are you having issues with? It's likely many addons don't handle portablization well at present. Could you please tell me specifically what files/folders/registry entries you see with both apps in separate bug reports in their respective forums?

Blender Addons

The addons are generally python scripts that are placed into Blender's addon folder. Some have to be installed from a zip file through the user preferences dialog window. These I have stored on the USB stick in an addon folder outside of the Blender app folder. Actually, I think it happened before I added any addons.

Am I missing something?

Yes, what app are you talking about? It's very difficult to help if the only clue I have are "addons". Of course, what you describe is not the way the apps should work so something went wrong. But what and where we only can guess...

Please add some more information: what app, what OS? and anything that could help as well.

Started from Scratch

OK, I backed up all my files, reformatted the USB stick and re-installed the PortableApps platform and Blender through the platform, in case something went wrong with the previous installation. I'm having the same problem. Blender is putting a folder in my Roaming folder with user preferences and recent files. So how do I submit a bug report for this?

Resolved

For anyone else having this problem you need to go to BlenderPortable/Blender/2.79 and create a new folder called config. Blender will automatically start putting your recent files and user prefs and startup file there. No more Blender Foundation folder in the Roaming folder. And you should be good to go on any machine.

Thanks to all tried to help.
