Why Don't I Get Email Updates When People Respond to a Thread I'm Subscribed To?

I have several threads that I am subscribed to but not once ever have I received an email notification when anyone else adds a response to the threads. Why is failure happening? Is this common for other users besides myself? What can I do to fix this?

I believe....

If you are signed on and someone posts to one of your subscribed threads you are not sent an email. The emails are only for users not signed on.

Happens Also When I'm Not Signed On

I take it you mean logged-in but not actively using the forum. The way this forum works if I've logged-in and then close all that forum tabs in my browser my log-in is still active. I assume that a cookie is set on my system to say I'm logged-in. If I completely close down my browser, relaunch it and then visit the forum again then I have to log-in again (I have my browser set to delete all cookies on close).

In any case, logged-in or not, I never get any email notifications from PortableApps forum. Makes me think there is something wrong in that.

Use Portable Apps on both Flash Drive and HDD/SSD.

Hotmail

You're using Hotmail. Hotmail blocks all email from Rackspace cloud.

Yes I'm Using Hotmail

Thanks, John. Yes I'm on a Hotmail account. Do you know of any way round this issue?

Different Provider

You need to use a different email address. Mailgun will occasionally rotate IP addresses, but Hotmail blocks most automated emails including ones you specifically request. Yahoo has similar issues. There is absolutely nothing you can do within your Hotmail account to fix this as they block them at a server level before it even reaches your account.

I'll Try Using My ISP Email Address

Thanks again, John. That is all a bit above my knowledge level. I'll trying using my ISP email address and see if that works. I've changed it now. Now I'll log out and see if someone responds to a thread I post into over the next few days.

Got a Notification Now (First Ever One)

Yipee! That seems to have worked, at least once. Just got an email notification informing me that someone had posted into this thread. The someone, it turned out, was me. Assumption now is that my ISP email address is going to work fine for this forum. However, I am now wondering why you stick with this "Rackspace cloud" thingy (whatever that is) when it is known to cause problems for the forum? Wouldn't it be better for the forum to find another way?

Also Working Even If I'm Logged-in

Just tested this with my above post and I seem to get notifications even if I'm logged-in to the forum and even if I'm viewing the page that had the new post. Excellent.

Rackspace Cloud

We're hosted in the Rackspace Cloud servers (1 largest size cloud server, 1 largest size cloud database hosted session, 1 backup session). As with most providers, they don't permit mailing from their hosted cloud servers. So, you have to use a mail service provider that handles transactional emails (account password and confirmations, topic notifications, purchase emails, newsletters, etc). Mailgun is Rackspace's email provider for these and we get a deal on using them since we use the Rackspace Cloud. Mailgun advertises Hotmail compatibility but the truth is that Hotmail sucks for blocking transactional emails and just about every provider has issues with them constantly. We could pay a lot more for a different provider, but I'm not planning on doing so as I still have debt to pay off related to this project.

Thanks Again - I'll Try See if can get this to Work with Hotmail

Okay, thanks again.

I'm going to test see if I can get Hotmail to work with forum notifications. So I'll be doing some edits in this thread to force notifications to be sent to me. It's the only way I can test. If that doesn't work then I might contact Hotmail/Outlook and complain - not that that would make much difference to Microsoft.

You Can't Do Anything

Hotmail blocks the initial send of the message from Mailgun regardless of content. There is absolutely nothing you can do from your end.

As You Say - Can't Do Anything

All my testing failed. Next is contact Hotmail/Outlook, if I can be bothered. I suppose the reply would be of the order, "Sorry, company policy. Nothing we can do. Privacy and security, primary concerns. Blah, blah, blah."
