Darktable - OpenSource Lightroom alternative (RAW processor)

Hi All,

Since I use a laptop that I don't have admin rights to, I rely on PAF (non exe) portable apps. I was wondering if anyone could make the following application portable for windows?

Any thoughts on the new version

Wondering what your thoughts would be on updating this to the latest version of Darktable?

Darktable portable.

There are two file managers out there:
1. Total Commander
2. Double Commander.
What they have in common is that if you click on the installer file (darktable-3.8.1-win64.exe in case of Darktable) and press ctrl+PgDn both file managers will open the file like an archive, and you'll have access to the program structure as it would be after installation. All you need to do then is to copy the folders into a location of your choice. It doesn't work on all installers, fortunately Darktable isn't one of them.

7-Zip

You can do this with 7-Zip. It doesn't make an app portable, though.

Have you tried it?

Have you tried it?
From my experience, most binaries that can be retrieved by TC, DC or 7-Zip from their installers run from USB keys or other portable storage with no problems whatsoever.
That does make them portable, unless we complicate the definition of "portable" by adding "has a dedicated portable installer" to "can run from an external drive".

See our definition

You can see our definition, and the guidelines we follow to consider an application portable, along with information about why we do what we do, here: https://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_app

You're right. An app acquired

You're right. An app acquired by extracting the files from an installer, even though most probably working perfectly from any location, would leave its configuration files all over the place, among other things.
Still, if someone's in desperate need, better that, than nothing.

Settings, Privacy Issues, Etc

Most apps that don't rely on DRM or deep OS integration (drivers, etc) will run if you copy the files from one system to another or extract them from an installer. As Gord mentioned, we have guidelines of what makes an app portable. That includes your settings staying with the app and continuing to work as you move between PCs. And not leaving behind data on the local machine, especially potentially sensitive data.
