Tor browser

Program: Tor browser

License: Open Source

Description: Tor Browser lets you use Tor on Microsoft Windows, Apple MacOS, or GNU/Linux without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured web browser to protect your anonymity, and is self-contained (portable).

Other: It's a portable version by itself and based on firefox. But I'm looking to launch it from portable apps platform.

get it from Tor

Get it from Tor Project, this is the way you should use it. This is the correct and uptodate version there. No big use to have it for download somewhere else, as you will probably get outdated version or incompatioble or what ever.
You can start it from menu as usual.

How to Install External Apps

Just install it in your PortableApps folder.
eg. same folder level (siblings) of standard PortableApps apps

Browser directory

If you open up the Tor Browser directory, you'll see a Browser directory. That's the one you should place within your X:\PortableApps directory. The parent directory doesn't really serve a purpose. And the shortcut the installer creates will break as you move PCs anyway. The platform will automatically see Tor Browser's firefox.exe and updater.exe files. You can hide the icon for the updater by right clicking on it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

The steps were a little

The steps were a little different for me. I had to...

  1. Move the "Tor Browser\Browser" folder to "X:\PortableApps\PortableApps" where all the other folders for apps I've installed with the platform were located.
    • I renamed the folder from "Browser" to "Tor Browser". I think this is what the PortableApps menu uses for the name of the menu entry. This is probably not necessary, but I didn't try it without renaming the folder.
  2. Click Apps -> Refresh App Icons
  3. Search for "Browser" in the PortableApps menu.
  4. Right-click on each of the entries that didn't point to "firefox.exe" and click "Hide"
    • It had an entry for every .exe file in the directory. They all showed as "Tor Browser", but I was able to identify which entry pointed to "firefox.exe" by hovering over each entry and waiting for the tooltip to appear, showing the exe file it pointed to.

I also right-clicked the remaining entry and set the Category to "Internet".

I know this is an old thread, but I arrived at it today after doing a web search. Neither the information in the last post nor the information at the "Adding Other Apps" page previously linked was exactly right. So, I posted this for the next person to land on this thread.

For the record: it still works in 02.2022

I applied the method Vince Aggrippino described above, except I did not rename the folder from "Browser" to "Tor Browser".
It works like a charm.
