I did some looking around on the 'net and GIMP 2.10 doesn't seem to have been deprecated for XP, but it won't open on my old offline machine at all. (In Task Manager, GIMPPortable.exe appears briefly and then disappears.) This is a completely vanilla virgin install on a usb with the customary path (~:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\), XP SP3 x86, English language. Opens okay on Win7, haven't tried on Win10.
I happen to have a PortableApps folder on the XP box's C: drive with a copy of GIMPPortable 2.6. Would that have any bearing? I experimented by renaming the executables in 2.6, but 2.10 still wouldn't open.
Thoughts? Since this particular machine no longer has access to the internet (hence, no Photoshop), I would like to have some kind of major image editor on it.
As indicated on the GIMP Portable homepage, it requires Windows 7 and later. GIMP 2.10 will no longer run on Windows XP and Vista. You must use the older and unsupported GIMP 2.8.x releases.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Ack, my bad. Didn't see that.
Maybe it's just as well. 2.6 works pretty well on that somewhat underpowered computer. 2.8 didn't.
