Almost entire folders and email lost after transition from San Francisco to Lyon, France

Thank you for letting me use TBP.

I was using ThunderBird Portable (TBP) w/ no problem until 29th May in San Francisco. However, when I went back to Lyon, France and ran TBP, I lost almost all of the folders, sub-folders and emails I'd kept for ages.

My TBP is stored on a USB key (Patriot Slate 125GB), and run under Windows 10 on Thoshiba dynabook R73/38MW. I'm downloading my emails from Gmail server.

Come to think of it, exactly the same problem happened before when I returned from San Francisco to France two years ago.

Please copy your response to

Thanks.

Follow-up

I don't know if this was the cause of disappearance of folders and emails, but this problem happened when I was cleaning up mysteriously duplicated emails by deleting one of them. Isn't there any correlation between the deletion of emails and the disappearance of the entire emails?

Everything Else The Same?

If everything is the same including the PC, the drive you run on, the drive letter, etc, then it's just like running local Thunderbird. The only difference is your geographic change. When you traveled, did you first log into Google within your web browser or did you hit Gmail's IMAP server via Thunderbird first? I ask because Gmail's IMAP implementation can be a bit wonky, and it's possible that when you first logged in from a new geographic location, Google first responded that you needed to verify your login. It's possible that in this process, Thunderbird thought Gmail told it that all your folders were empty and then dutifully deleted the local copies.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
