Hello,
I try to use GoogleChromePortable in a pool of virtual machines. I want to "install" ChromePortable local on the machines - but the settings and the bookmarks etc. should be in the roaming userprofiles.
When I try to change the ProfileDirectory and the SettingsDirectory via GoogleChromePortable.ini it is not possible to set the path to %APPDATA%\Chrome.
It is also not possible to access a homedrive (E:\).
It is only possible to change the directory via "..\..\Users" but %USERNAME% is also not supported.
Any further ideas?
What you want to accomplish is not how the apps are designed to work. They are designed to run from a single self-contained directory called GoogleChromePortable. You can not specify other locations for the data using environment variables or drive letters.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Not completely Unsupported.
I know that the portable version is designed to work in a single directory ... but it is possible to change the locations via GoogleChromePortable.ini. So it is halfway possible - why not the full way?
It would be the perfect solution for the problems that I have ... if it would work. Maybe there is an other solution with GoogleChromePortable which I don't know - so I'm glad for any idea.
If you want it running in local mode (writing to APPDATA), you can just run chrome.exe directly. Some reason you wouldn't just do that?

Hello John T. Haller,
you mean I should run ..\App\Chrome-bin\chrome.exe instead of GoogleChromePortable.exe.
If I do so the GoogleChromePortable.ini will be ignored - but will it work with the Parameter chrome.exe --user-data-dir="" ?
Which path (for the roaming profile) is correct (%APPDATA%\Chrome or "${roaming_app_data}\Chrome")?
