Version 60

Thunderbird 60 doesn't work properly. 6 out of my 10 add-ons don't work with this version which makes it impossible for me to do what i want to do with Thunderbird.
How can i get the previous version back?

Old Version, Insecure, Unsupported

You can download old versions here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Thunderbir...

Note that these are no longer supported and will likely become more insecure as time goes on and unpatched security issues are found and publicized.

Like Firefox, Thunderbird now no longer supports legacy extensions.

So it went from version 52 to

So it went from version 52 to version 60?

"Like Firefox, Thunderbird now no longer supports legacy extensions."
Ya, i figured it was something stupid like that.
Unlike Firefox, there aren't any replacement extensions.

"Installed" the older version

"Installed" the older version and i still can't use my extensions, so i guess i'll have to find a new email client or learn to deal with Thunderbird's new limitations.

Backup

Moving from 52 to 55 in Firefox permanently altered some files, so I'd wager the same happened in Thunderbird. You could restore a backup of the extensions and settings of Thunderbird Portable from an earlier backup without touching the mail folders if you'd like.

There's a dearth of mail clients for Windows these days. Most were abandoned. Some are only minimally maintained and don't really stay on top of security issues. None have the extension support of older Thunderbird. Or even Thunderbird 60.

Moving backwards

Software does less and less, yet they still call it progress, what's wrong with Mozilla.

Modernize

In order to modernize the Firefox engine, they had to ditch legacy extensions. Quite a lot has been written about the technical reasons for this. The code to ensure they continued working was a mess, it was greatly impeding all development, it was impeding multi-process development, and it was the number one reason for stability issues within the browser. Extensions were the reason Firefox couldn't get faster for years. And the vast majority of users either didn't use any extensions at all or only used an ad blocker. The modern extension system preserves the most popular extension usages and fixes the issues that were holding it back.

Not Firefox anymore

All i know is i'm stuck using a browser that looks like Chrome, doesn't have Chrome's performance, doesn't have old Opera's reliability and doesn't have Firefox's old versatility.
The only reason i'm not using Chrome is that i hate Google.

I'm hoping Vivaldi becomes more versatile.

Firefox Matches Chrome

In benchmarks, Firefox now beats Chrome by a bit in some and Chrome beats Firefox by a bit in others. They're basically identical in performance now due to all the changes. If you wish to complain about these decisions, please do so at the publisher. We have nothing at all to do with these decisions and nothing you write here will be read by anyone that has any influence over the decisions they make.
