I am interested in useing Songbird as a portable App. Songbird is a open source clone of iTunes. A portable version would allow for playing music etc.
New: Run-Command (Dec 2, 2024), Platform 29.5.3 (Jun 27, 2024)
1,100+ portable packages, 1.1 billion downloads

Songbird's trademark/copyright policy is pretty restrictive for an open source app. We would need to recompile the whole app and release it under another name with different logos and an entirely different theme to be even able to package it portably.

Whistles..
And here I was thinking it would be the perfect portable app...
What license are they using?

The code is GPLed... but the app states:
"This binary also contains trademarks of Pioneers of the Inevitable LLC including, but not limited to, the name “Songbird

What about making a launcher and having users drop the appropriate files in? Then they can't complain...

That's what I did for the PortableGmailNotifier and no one complained.

We just can't use the name Songbird as any part of the name of the wrapper...

That's not cool. That doesn't sound like a GPL license to me......
-Justin
The GPL applies to code. So Songbird's code is free to do what we like with it. But, the name, logo, and all graphics have been specifically claimed as non-distributable... which ties our hands entirely.

...Which is utterly ridiculous.

Maybe we could make a partnership with them? So we could spread their product and they get publicising, and we get portaSongBird?
Unless we make a PortaNightingale that runs SongBird. (Let the naming commence!)

Well...we could call it portable bird's nest or something.
unless that sounds really stupid

I made a launcher, can I post it or dose the person have to PM mew?
You can't post the launcher with Songbird included.
You can post the launcher without Songbird.

What i meant, just the launcher.
Songbird Portable Luancher
Install songbird
copy data from the installation directory to "app"
Click start.exe after uninstallation
After closing the app registry entries are removed but the (user)\Application Data\Songbird folder remains.
Missed that while monitoring the installation, sorry. Guess I will just have to stick with the thinstalled one.
Just copy the installation files to \Portable Songbird\App\Songbird
Download Here
Just wondering...didn't John say that you can't have songbird anywhere in the name?
Just wanted to put that out there...
But great job on the launcher
You can't if you're redistributing Songbird itself, but this is just a separate launcher.
i installed as normal, the moved the installation files to \Portable Songbird\App\Songbird
and i get the dos box with the notification of somethine dumped to vlc-help.txt.. the txt file is empty, and the app never launches
Would you mind uploading it again?
Deleted it by accident

Just wondering will there be a fix to the mediaplayer in portable songbird not playing songs? Sorry for the massive bump.
Not my launcher.
Nerd, yes in your launcher. It doesn't work. I've done everything said and the songs remain at 0:00 in the timeline and never start. I copied the Songbird folder into the right directory and it ran it is just that no music was able to play. If you read Espreon's and chris's comments they have the same problems too so it isn't me.
Your launcher can launch Songbird portably but when I try to play videos or music, Songbird says the total time is 0:00 and does not play anything at all....
same problem as Nerd and Keithacole...
when you start the launcher, keithacole's little command box pops up asking you to press enter. if you don't kill the command prompt, then Songbird starts, but with Nerd's problem. As soon as you kill the command box, Songbird dies.
