PAM Options

A couple suggestions for future versions of PAM.
The ability to have the Music, Pictures, Videos open a custom program rather than explorer.
Have the TrayIcon "hint" display the drive label and letter.

Not specific to PAM..
How about a "sticky" Topic just for suggestions at the top of each support forum.

Both Good

Both good ideas SmithTech. BTW since it appears you use another file manager, do you happen to know of a file manager that uses it's own file association list? So that if you open a file through it it opens with the program you specify, without affecting Windows file associations.

Unfortunately NO, I have been looking for a good, stable, FREE, portable file manager but haven't found one yet Sad

I have 7zip, I am looking

I have 7zip, I am looking for something similar to explorer.
I've tried ExplorerXP and Xplorer2
ExplorerXP doesn't seem to work with UNC paths.
Xplorer2 works great but isn't free.

What's Wrong with Windows Explorer

Personally, I'll never quite get what's wrong with just plain old Windows Explorer. Granted, I haven't played with any explorer replacements in years since, at the time, I found them clunky and buggy and they never seemed to work as well as plain ole Explorer.

I like the 2 pane view in

I like the 2 pane view in the replacements, its convenient for moving and copying files.
My original suggestion really has more to do with pictures and music though.
I recompiled PAM so it opens IrfanView for the pictures folder, figured it would be a nice options for others.

Oh yeah

I completely forgot about the original question (sorry, been busy and a tad scattered).

I'm adding in the Drive name and letter to the tooltip for PAM. A few people suggested that and it's a good idea.

Let me ponder the whole open with a program thing. I'm not so sure about that as it would be quite different from the behavior of the Windows Start Menu (and hence, not be what people expect from it). Though, I can see why some folks may want to do that with the upcoming picture viewer and media player apps. Probably default to its current behavior and with an option to open an app.

True it would be different

True it would be different than windows, but even in windows you have the option to right click and open with a listed app.
I think defaulting to current behavior with the option to open an app is the way to go.
Which actually brings up an other suggestion, if your going to add options, how about the option to explore the folder rather than just browse/open it.
I like having the folder list on the left as in the explore button.

No and Yes

In Windows XP's start menu, there's no option to open with a specific app. Even if you shift-right click. But, like you said, I think it would be a worthwhile addition.

I like the idea of making Explore a default rather than just Open. I really need to finish putting together the Options Window so some of these can be added more easily.

Are you using the "classic"

Are you using the "classic" start menu?
I am using the 2 column "XP" start menu, when I right click on pictures or music I get a menu with Browse with irfanview, queue in winamp, etc.

Ah

Those are specifically added to *ALL* windows folder context menus by those programs themselves. Windows doesn't provide the ability to assign those icons to an app, though. That's what I meant.

Sorry I misunderstood what

Sorry I misunderstood what you meant. Sad
Thought you might be using the classic menu as those folders don't show up there.
Also I don't get those options for the My Documents folder.

other ideas

some ideas i had for PAM:
-auto-update of both the menu and apps included
-collapsable groups (like in PStart)
-changable backgrounds/themes
-eject device on exit

i'm not sure how much of this is doable, but i figured i'd throw it out there
