Blocked

That generally means the download is being blocked. Either at the organizational level (a corporate or university proxy), network level (misbehaving network ad-blocker) or local machine level (software proxy, antivirus).

Reply to Mr. Haller

Thank you for the reply. It does give me something to look into. I notice that if I download the items from the website, and run them, they update just fine. Only when updating through the platform fails. I hope that makes sense.

Internet Explorer

Try it in Internet Explorer. It also uses the Windows internet components and Windows networking settings just like the PA.c Updater does.

Maybe I did not make it clear

Maybe I did not make it clear. Updating through the Platform fails. Downloading the update items directly from website (using Chrome browser) and then running them from the Desktop succeeds. I am not as knowledgeable as you, but the problem seems to be with the Platform ... which I just now updated ... but only by downloading it from website and running it. I don't think it is dependent on the Platform version because I have had this problem frequently in the past.

You're not likely to get a response since you did not perform the requested steps. You were very specifically asked to try with Internet Explorer. Chrome and Firefox are not valid tests since the PA platform utilizes the components provided by Windows, just as IE does. Try what he asked and then you will get a response.

Sorry. I will keep that in mind on the next update.
Edit:
There has been a big misunderstanding. I was not using a browser .... the error came from updating Chrome through the "platform". i have no problem using a browser to download chrome portable.

If I am the one who misunderstands, excuuuuuuuuse me. All I can say is running Portable Apps Platform notifes me of a Chrome (portable) update which fails. If that doesn't deserve a reply, fine ... I guess.

Internet Explorer

Please specifically try in Internet Explorer. That will help us determine if there is an issue with the Windows networking components that the PA.c Platform uses and depends upon to be able to download updates. It doesn't matter if you can download in Firefox or Chrome as those don't use the Windows networking components we're trying to troubleshoot.

Thank you, Mr. Haller for the

Thank you, Mr. Haller for the friendly reply. It is obviously confusion on my part. Seems to me there are two ways to use portable apps. D/L the Portable Apps uh ... 'application', ... choose the portable apps you want, and have the 'application' get and install them. The application will update those as needed and that is where my problem is. The update for Chrome browser fails.

Another way is to forgo the APPLICATION and download the preferred apps separately which would be via a browser. I am doing that ... with Chrome ... I go to the website, d/l Chrome Portable to my desktop, close Chrome (I am going to update it) and run GoogleChromePortable_75.0.3770.80_online.paf.exe from the desktop. This is how I get around the failure.

So, please forgive me, but I do not understand what you wish me to do with IE, but once I do, I will do it with glee.

The link d/ls a file "75.0

The link d/ls a file "75.0.3770.80_chrome_installer.exe". I chose to save it as I have already installed "GoogleChromePortable_75.0.3770.80_online.paf.exe'. If you want me to run it, I will. It was a very slow d/l especially at about 85%.

EDIT:
Looks like it installed rather than simply saved. I now have 2 chrome browsers ... one traditional and one portable.

Did I do exactly what you wanted?

Is what happened what you expected? I am not sure exactly what we are doing, .. but 's OK. You are leading.

Just Download

You can uninstall Chrome using your Control Panel. I only wanted you to download it and mention any errors. Odd that one did not occur. Would you please try to download Chrome Portable in Internet Explorer here: https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

Then run the installer directly and just try to install it your Desktop directory. You can delete the resulting GoogleChromePortable folder in your Desktop directory when done. Please post any errors with either bit.

as you requested

no errors in downloading or installing. The only error I get is when trying to update (chrome) from within the portable apps launcher which I can no longer test because the outdated one has now been replaced/updated.

Edit:

I deleted all portable apps including the launcher. Installed launcher anew. Installed 7zip portable from launcher. No errors. Tried Chome. Same error. Tried Iron. Same error.

D/L'd each one directly with IE, Though pretty slow ... they both downloaded with no error/failure. Chrome (paf) is installing right now. Will hold back on Iron.

Strange

I thought at first it was the secondary download and Google blocking you, but Iron is a single package just like 7-Zip and both are downloaded from SourceForge, so if one fails they both should and vice versa. Is there anything else with your setup you could think of that would contribute to this issue? Have you tried it on another PC within your location?

Tried on different machine.

Not sure if I have proven anything, but installed PA on a different machine. Opted to install Iron and it succeeded. When I try that on the problem machine, it, as well as updating Chrome, fails. As for why, I have no intelligent idea. There are a lot of differences between machines.

Problem machine W10-32 (Tablet/laptop). Not a heck of a lot of memory or disk space ... but I don't think that is the problem. There are still ample resources for what I am trying to do with PA. Test machine W10-64 with tons of resources.

The only way to 'find a culprit' that I know of is with Belarc Advisor .. which gives a detailed machine profile. It may show up something that rings your bell.

On the 'problem' machine. I uninstalled Chrome portable. I downloaded Chrome paf.exe directly from website. I did an install through the launcher of a 'paf file'. It's not looking good ... indicating a 20 minute (and climbing) install. I predict it will blow up .. but don't know yet.

Again, not sure I am proving anything.

Thank you for 'staying with me' on this.

EDIT:
Yep, ... that 'install' on problem machine just blew up with the same error.

Disk Scan

Have you tried scanning both the C drive of the affected machine and the drive you are installing to (if different)? TEMP is used during online installs and it can show odd errors if it runs out of space or encounters a drive error.

Drive errors. Yes!!

Repairing now. Being the drive on this notebook is actually an SD card, I got solid state drive and SD Card mixed up in my head. Thinking ya can't defrag a Solid State Drive, .. I have been thinking you can't check it for errors either (I don't own a solid state drive .. never have). This 'confusion' kept me from CHECKING that card (all this time). I'm embarrassed. Too much technology for this old military vet. Chrome Portable is installing right now. I am sure this was the problem and has been for a long time. THANK YOU for all your attention. Sorry I took so much of your time.
