A request was made to make digiKam portable many years ago by photomacro. That request was rejected due to huge install of KDE framework by digiKam:

I haven't looked at it recently.
Right now there's quite a list of applications to update, so until we're caught up, I, and I'm sure John, won't have time to look at it again.

Any update if the latest release digiKam 6.1.0 could be made portable? Thank you for all the hard work!
Next year may be a good time to revisit digiKam. Version 6 is in beta, and the release version is expected later this month. Waiting until the first one or two point releases for 6 to come out would be reasonable. Here are two quotes from the digicam.org website about version 6, which relates to concerns posted on the earlier thread (node/28757):
“A huge factoring of source code has been done to reduce external dependencies again with the goal to simplify application compilation, packaging and maintenance for the next years.”
“Also, the port to Qt5 with less KDE dependencies has seriously stabilized the application and we now enter the last stage to stabilize all source code on this platform well.”
Version 6 has additional features, including video management support.
The developers seem to be serious about supporting digiKam on Windows. They are including in the Windows build Dr. Mingw, which is a Just-in-Time (JIT) debugger.

2 weeks ago digiKam 6.0 was finally released.

I hope that now it'll be much easier to make it portable.
The new version is at

It contains bug fixes and other improvements. The Windows version is now available in the .tar.xz compressed archive format, in addition to the .exe installer. The .tar.xz is a good starting point for creating a Windows portable app version.
