link in thunderbird portable opens new firefox session rather than using already opened session

A couple of updates ago, I don't remember exactly when it started, when I click on a link in an email from thunderbird portable, it opens a new version of firefox rather than using the currently open firefox session. What worse, it doesn't load any of the extensions.
This is on latest windows 10. The "choose a default browser" is set to firefox.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated as this has become more annoying each time.

Just to wrap this up, nothing

Just to wrap this up, nothing in the other thread had any effect on this problem. Still broken for me.

Default Browser

The only way to set Firefox Portable as your default browser is to use a third party utility as detailed in the other thread. If you set Firefox as default in Firefox, it will not work. At all.
