Joplin Portable 1.0.85 Development Test

Application: Joplin.
GitHub: GitHub repository
Category: Office
Description: Joplin is an open source note taking and to-do application, which can handle a large number of notes organised into notebooks. The notes are in Markdown format.

Notes exported from Evernote via .enex files can be imported into Joplin, including the formatted content (which is converted to Markdown), resources (images, attachments, etc.) and complete metadata (geolocation, updated time, created time, etc.). Plain Markdown files can also be imported.

The notes can be synchronised with various cloud services including Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive or the file system (for example with a network directory). When synchronising the notes, notebooks, tags and other metadata are saved to plain text files which can be easily inspected, backed up and moved around.

End-To-End Encryption (E2EE) is also supported for all the notes and attachments, for all the supported synchronisation targets.

GitHub Project Links

Hi,

You should add links to the project on GitHub - https://github.com/laurent22/joplin.

Looks really nice!

PortableApps Project

Where is the code for the PortableApps project?

Something like Michael Wayne does - https://github.com/2wayne.

Error while trying to connect with dropbox

Hi, I recently installed this release in PortableApps (downloaded it and installed it from a local folder), but when I try to connect to dropbox ("Synchronisieren"), I get this text (after submitting the dropbox-code) in a message-box:

Could not authorise application
{"error": "v1_retired"}
Please try again.

Am I doing something wrong or is it a known bug in the development release?

Greetings

merlinuwe

I'm seeing this error as well

I'm seeing this error as well and no idea why it's suddenly doing that as it's been working fine for the past few months. I've contacted Dropbox support about it and hopefully it's just a temporary glitch.

test comments

Installed via the provided file, seems to work with my Nextcloud syncing, and the few notes I made - good

The Joplin 'check for updates' pops up, pointing towards a newer (non-portable) version from your github. The PortableApps applicaton has it's own 'PortableApps.com updater' mechanism, which will probably need to be figured out in lieu of the updater within Joplin to move this out of the testing phase.

Nothing to figure out

There is nothing for a dev to figure out about platform-based updates - it is just a part of the release process if the app is ever officially released.

But a way to turn off the automatic update checks within the app is something any app with automatic checks should have.

Can I update from github?

Can I update portableapps.com version with newer portable version from Github? Here is version 1.0.85 and on Github is already 1.0.95.

I think if you replace

I think if you replace "Joplin.exe" in App/Joplin with the JoplinPortable.exe file it should work. If it doesn't, it will definitely work if you replace it with the version from the installer (but it's a bit annoying because you need to install the app to extract Joplin.exe from it).

Thank you

Thank you
I renamed "JoplinPortable.exe" to "Joplin.exe" and replaced the older "Joplin.exe" in App/Joplin with it. And it seems it's working even with PortableApps menu.

Hope for the future

I have just evaluated Joplin for my needs and found it to be superb and would love it to become a released app, particularly for the PAF update feature.

I have found two problems that need to be addressed,

1. Options > Application > Automatically update the application should be unchecked for the PA.c released version (if and when this happens)

2. The temporary folder tree \Users\\AppData\Roaming\Joplin should be deleted on exit.

@Laurent, to get more exposure here (and hopefully increase it's chance of John T. haller agreeing to release it) please could you update the dev test version here each time you release a new portable version at Joplin.org? See mwayne's Handbrake dev test (https://portableapps.com/node/55942) as an example.

Anybody can package the app from the release, so perhaps you could do it? I wouldn't put my hopes up though, because as far as I can tell PortableApps is a project that's more or less on hold, so it's likely to be a waste of time to develop anything for it.

I might be able to

@Laurant, I might be able to but would need some help. Please can we discuss it somewhere in the Joplin Forums?

Please Update

Please update and I'll see about getting it released next week. I posted folding@home last week and am working on BOINC next. I'm focusing on apps to help folks help with COVID, keep in touch with each other, and work from home. Organization apps fit into the latter.

Updated and Released

Hi Laurent. This has been significantly updated and released: https://portableapps.com/apps/office/joplin-portable

It's now 32-bit and 64-bit in a single package. Duplicate content between the two (locales, icudtl.dat, etc) is moved back and forth as necessary taking install size down from 1.35GB to 869MB. The 32-bit version is optional and left off by default when installing under 64-bit Windows taking it down further to 704MB. There's no need to unzip locally as with the officially released portable package. The launcher will update the backup directory on each launch within the database.sqlite settings file.

I also added in Donation links to the main app's appinfo.ini (PortableApps.com Platform right-click and Donate) and help.html

Anything else you'd like touched up, please let me know. And I'm happy to pass it back to you.

That's brilliant, thank you

That's brilliant, thank you John! The changes you made sound good to me. How about updating it when new versions are available, is that somehow automated? If you need us to do something on our side to make that process easier please let me know.

Partially Automated

It's partially automated. I have to update my auto-builder to add in removing the shared files and zipping the Chromium license still (8.4MB LICENSES.chromium.html becomes 942KB LICENSES.chromium.zip). But I get notifications of your releases on github, have the builder download and extract them, then manually verify the shared files before building for right now.

I'm good building and hosting. If you'd ever like to take over either or both of those bits, I'm happy to pass it on to ya. You're welcome!

The portable apps version of

The portable apps version of Joplin isn't portable, it creates all the electron data in the appData folder.
AppData\Roaming\Joplin

I currently use the --user-data-dir param to store the data portably using the portable 'JoplinPortable.exe' file, that seems to work fine.

Any way to make the portable apps version portable?

profile

The JoplinPortable.exe launcher uses the --profile switch. You can see it within the App\AppInfo\Launcher\JoplinPortable.ini file.

Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? On my Windows 10 64-bit machine, running the 64-bit version of Joplin.exe with the --user-data-dir switch yields "An error occurred: Unknown flag: --user-data-dir"
