basically you are suggesting an explorer replacement that uses it own internal, portable list of file associations, sounds good, I'll look into writing a basic one in the next couple of weeks, that is IF JOHN EVER E-MAILS ME BACK
AND IF HE MAILS ME, FFP WILL HAVE DEFAULTING FEATURES

Person 2: What?

Sounds good but are they portable? I mean can you assign relative paths to the programs you choose so that the apps on your portable device are used regardless of the current drive letter.
I'm not sure about Choose media player, but the first 3 have no portability issues.
ADDED: I forgot, ChoiceEditor needs Visual Basic runtime libraries, so you have to keep them with you, otherwise it won't run under Vista.

Has anyone looked into creating a program like I suggested?

...from V-com/AvanQuest (free version, natch) ALSO takes care of its own file associations.

I have Universal Viewer on the Explorer context menu and I have 7-Zip, FastStone Image Viewer, Nvu, OpenOffice.org and PSPad defined as User Tools.
If my USB drive is attached, there's just the one extra step of invoking Universal Viewer, then clicking on the appropriate program.

There are several tools for TotalComander, designed for doing this.
Choice Editor
Open File Shell For TC
Total Editor
Quite similar:
Choose Media Player

XYplorer can maintain its own file associations and use a drive letter relative to its own location, but it's not free (in either sense of the word).
