[Fixed] Thunderbird 78.6.0 auto updated itself despite setting disabling that feature

I have Thunderbird Portable set to "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" checked. I always update Thunderbird Portable with the updated version when it comes out here.

I just had Thunderbird automatically install the 78.6.1 update upon starting up this morning despite the fact that I have my update preference set to the contrary. Has anyone else had that happen to them with 78.6.0?

The solution is to delete

The solution is to delete "updater.exe" file. This action will notify you for new vers., but will not be auto-updated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the workaround.

Wondering if I should open a ticket with Mozilla about this...

Uncommanded auto update

I have a similar problem. I regularly check the settings to confirm that Thunderbird is not set to auto update. Despite this, Thunderbird will occassionally update itself before the PortableApps version is available. I find when this happens the setting is now on auto update but I certainly haven't changed it.
Is there anyway to permanently disable auto updates?
I do not have an 'update.exe' file in my TB portable folder. (although there is an updater.ini file).

Always Check the Setting Immediately After Doing an Update

joetron2030,

Thunderbird (and also Firefox) frequently change that setting on install of a new version - and that is very annoying. I now have the habit of every time I manually install an update of going and making sure that the setting "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" is actually in force (frequently it is changed). Very annoying but that is how I deal with that situation.

P.S. Having read the above post on deleting updater.exe I'm now wondering if you have to do that after every manual install of a new version. I mean won't the installer of the new version just create a new updater.exe anyway (so you have to then go and delete that every time)?

Use Portable Apps on both Flash Drive and HDD/SSD.

If it is your

Personal computer, not something you’d want to do to someone else’s computer. But I found a tutorial via google on this very subject about disabling automatic updates through a registry setting. It works, is reversible and works with any Mozilla (former) product, ex Thunderbird Firefox and Seamonkey. It doesn’t affect updates via the platform either.

Fixed in 78.6.1

This is fixed in today's release of Thunderbird Portable 78.6.1 and Thunderbird Portable 85 Beta 3.
