Does portability generally also imply that the application doesn't leave any droppings of any sort on the host computer? I would think so, but maybe not.
Are there any reliable recommended programs to help test for this aspect of portability? I want to make sure I don't salt a guest host (e.g., a friend's computer) with any residues from portable apps I've used.

Official apps from this site will leave no trace on the host PC - this is part of the .paf specification for an application to be a true portable app.
Apps that you find that aren't hosted here aren't guaranteed to be truely portable and may leave traces.
filemon and regmon from sysinternals (now microsoft) are good tools to see what is happening to files and the registry.
Just open both filemon and regmon, run your application and see what happens. I believe that both filemon and regmon are themselves truely portable.
