I just installed GoogleChromePortable_87.0.4280.88_online.paf over GoogleChromePortable_87.0.4280.66_online.paf, in 2 separate loacations.
In the first location, after installation, I launch it, but it crashes in a few seconds.
In the second location, it still shows the same error I've had with it for some time now thru several versions, "An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 1: 0x80004005)." I've never found a solution for this.
Is it not possible to install over a previous version without wiping out the profile, and having to redo all custom app settings? or breaking the install?
Perhaps that could be done if that error code is dealt with?
Also, should I be using a 64 but version? I could only find a 64 bit dev (test) version.
I'm surprised nobody responded, especially about the error code. In the least, I would greatly appreciate it someone could give me a hint about where else I might go to solve this problem?
thanks

Chrome's updater is not portable. Never has been. Use the PortableApps.com Platform or do it manually: https://portableapps.com/support/portable_app#upgrading

I installed the platform and performed the updates. When first installed, the platform opened to the interface with the list of portableapps programs. I selected the Chrome, and the update was performed.
However, I checked "Create Shortcut, but I can't find it. I want to open the main interface with the list of apps. I found Start.exe, but it only opens to this

That's the menu, the main interface. Click on Apps to get more apps.

Got it. It wasn't readily apparent to me where the Apps sub menu would take me. Perhaps if there was some addition there that mentioned "Update apps" it would be more obvious. Grateful for the help. Thanks

If you look under apps, there are multiple options including Check for Updates (checks for updates you currently have installed), Get More Apps (get apps you don't have installed), manually install a PAF, refresh the menu, and show hidden icons.

The latest Chrome PortableApps is Version 88.0.4324.182. I just used the platform to update. Version is listed as 88.0.4324.146

BTW - What you did here was a clean install of Chrome to a different location than your original one.
You must follow the other directions for manually installing without the platform or move your Chrome into the platform. If you installed without the platform, it's assumed you understand where your apps are and how to perform manual updates.

Please, can someone explain why, in the past two days, I have attempted to update twice, via the PortableApps.com Platform, first from v88.0.4324.146, to v88.0.4324.182, and then to v88.0.4324.190 (Date Updated: 2021-02-23), but Chrome still shows the version as 88.0.4324.146?

The following link is to an image that shows the PortableApps.com Platform app list, with Google Chrome greyed out, which I interpret as no update available, but it offers no version number.

This link is an image showing the version after running the GoogleChromePortable_88.0.4324.190_online.paf.exe, as a fresh install to a different location than my other attempts.

Did you accidentally leave Chrome running so the upgrade didn't fully complete? Did you leave it running in the background?

I saw the complete update process, up to and including the final message that the exercise was completed.
Doesn't the the platform insist you must close all instances of Chrome before continuing the installation? I'm pretty sure everything was closed during the first and second updates.
These were the only Google related items running at the time

According to the platform, everything is up to date

I just took another image of the version, along with the timestamp to verify that it still indicates version 88.0.4324.146

You're using different locations. The "update" you're referring to multiple times is a clean install you're doing.

ok, it took a while, but I finally got it, I went over the posts again. The first time I guess I glossed over your remark about "move your Chrome into the platform." Somehow, I came to believe that when you "Check for updates", the platform just searches across the entire device for all portableapps folders. It never dawned on me that, for it to work, Chrome, or any other portable app, had to be physically located within the platform, whether the platform did the install, or not.
I moved that v88.0.4324.146 to the PortableApps.com Platform\PortableApps folder, and updated, no problem.
Thanks again for the help and your patience.
