GIMP Portable 2.2.13 Pre-Release 3 (Testers Needed)

I'm proud to announce the posting of a pre-release of GIMP 2.2.13. This is a multilingual package (an english-only one will be posted as well). This version updates to 2.2.13 and adds in full Vista compatibility. It's also now packaged in PortableApps.com Format.

Also new in this release is the ability to store GTK in a CommonFiles directory. In a standard setup, this would be:

X:\PortableApps
----\CommonFiles\
--------\gtk\
----\GimpPortable\
... etc

Just be sure to delete the GIMPPortable\App\gtk directory if you use this feature.

Even more significant is a new feature I've added to the launcher that I'm pretty excited about. It's a GIMP plugins pre-processor. It keeps track of where you last ran GIMP Portable from and automatically updates your pluginsrc file. This means that GIMP will start up without having to poll all your plugins each time, even when you move between PCs. It will still index them fully on the first launch, but after that, it won't need to. There is a slightly longer delay before the GIMP splash screen is shown while the launcher pre-processes the file.

Please give it a try and post any feedback.

Thanks,
John

UPDATE (Pre-Release 2): I added in a default set of settings so that GIMP won't even need to update plugins on first launch (it will if you're upgrading an existing install, though). I also added checking for an in-place upgrade so that it won't get stuck pre-processing the pluginsrc.

UPDATE (Pre-Release 3): I added in a checker to take care of the files that GIMP and GTK leave behind in the %USERPROFILE% directory (.fonts.cache-1, .gtk-bookmarks and the .thumbnails directory) The launcher needs to stick around until close to do it. Oh, and the file is named .paf.exe now (oversight in the PR2 release).

It's coming...

Just wanted to get GIMP and OO2.1 out the door first. GIMP was the last app not in PAF. And OO everyone is looking forward to (especially with the Java abilities).

I've got two versions of PAM in tandem. 1.0.2 which fixed the existing bugs n stuff. And 1.1 which adds in a lot of what we're waiting on. I'm hoping to post the final beta of 1.0.2 tomorrow for a Tuesday official release. But I don't want to sidetrack this thread... so no more PAM chat here.

Couldn't launch with my old profile

Installed it over my older copy (latest released version of GIMP Portable), moved GTK into the CommonFiles, tried to launch, and GIMPPortable sat there using 100% cpu (this was repeatable). Killed it, moved the Data directory aside, and it launched fine.

Tried going back to my old profile, and moving gtk back into the gimp directory, but that didn't help.

Finally tried adding in the LastDirectory setting from the default GIMPPortableSettings.ini into my profile one, and that fixed it. Guess the installer needs to handle that being missing better.

Once that was sorted, the faster launching when switching drive letters is definitely cool Smile

Ah yes

I'll need to add a default in if it's blank. Thanks for the bug report.

UPDATE - I added this in to Pre-Release 2.

Are the versions of gtk the

Are the versions of gtk the same in Gaim and GIMP?
If not which version would be preferred for testing the common directory?
I don't normally use Gaim (use trillian) but I will run Gaim for several days along with using gimp and let you know how it goes.

Use this one

The one included in the current release of Gaim is the WIN2K+ one whereas the one in GIMP is the one that works on any copy of Windows. So this one is preferable (although either will work on Win2K+).

Works well

The fast loading is great.
Is there any way of disabling plugins?
For example, if I only want to cut pictures in pieces, I dont need the other plugins.

No

There is no way to disable the loading of plugins at all in current versions of GIMP aside from manually deleting them.

Besides, with the pre-processor, it doesn't slow the load time down anymore.

PAF format

John,

I assume that we have to change the file extension from .exe to .paf.exe and PAM will be happy after that?

Pre-Release 3

It turns out that there were a few GIMP and GTK bits left behind on the local PC so I've updated the launcher to take care of these. Full details in the main topic.

I think the link is wrong. I clicked it, could not d/l. here's the right one: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portablegimp/GIMP_Portable_2.2.13_PRERE...
It might have something to do with the name change.

Nice

You changed the launcher quite a lot from PR2 to PR3, didn't you?

Yeah

There was a bug report on SF about the few files being left behind that I missed and I wanted to fix those before the next major release. GIMP is one of the more popular portable apps and, like the others, some people's first experience with open source, so I want it to be solid. That's why I spent the time working on the pre-processor, too.

Yes

I compared the sourcecodes and saw the changes.
What is the difference on the ini-stuff you changed at the beginning?
And BTW, nice jokes in the ReplaceInFile.nsh...;-)

Not much

There were a couple intermediate variable copies I eliminated. I switched it so it always waits for GIMP (due to the cleanup stuff it was needed) so that was pulled from the INI. And I added in all the checks at the end to see if certain things already exist and if not, to clean em up. That way it won't step on local GIMP or GTK settings in %USERPROFILE%.
