JRE and OOBase

Trying to get OOBase to work on an older tablet with 32-bit Windows 8.1,
Installed JRE 1.8.0.301,
went to set up the runtime environment path
selected Programs > Java > jre 1.8.0_301
Dialog box informs me: The folder you selected does not contain a Java runtime environment. Please select a different folder.

How to proceed?

jPortable?

Did you install LibreOffice Portable to X:\PortableApps\LibreOfficePortable and jPortable (32-bit) to X:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java? If so, opening up LibreOffice, Tools - Options, LibreOffice, Advanced, and checking off Oracle Corporation 1.8.0_301 and clicking OK should automatically work. I just tested this on a clean install and it worked. I was able to create a new database after setting it.

jportable has been installed

jportable has been installed to DRIVE:\PortableApps\CommonFiles\Java and Open Office restarted but still no JRE available?

I'm wondering if this is one of the differences between Libre Office and Open Office (4.1.10): once I open the Tools > Options dialog, the options are:
Open Office
...
- Java
-- shows the list box for Java runtime environments already installed, but no installed JREs
-- (buttons for [Add/Parameters/Class Path] but nothing for Advanced?)

LibreOffice

I'd suggest using LibreOffice over OpenOffice. I misread your post and thought you used LO. Not sure if OO works with the current version of java or not. I'll check in a bit.

UPDATE: It's working in OpenOffice as well. Perhaps try uninstalling and reinstalling OpenOffice (note that this will reset your settings and addons).

The problem with having outsize feet...

is that I frequently trip over them!

With a little free time to explore on another portable drive, I found the OO Java folder in PortableApps and the helpful little note that says (essentially) copy an existing installation directory structure here. So I did. And OO Base works as, IMO, it should.

The puzzle I am now working on is this:
I opened the jPortable.paf file from the PortableApps > Add a new app menu item, and while watching the details of the install unfold, it looked as if everything was going exactly as it should. But once the process finished, there was no jPortable app folder in PortableApps, jPortable was not listed as an installed app.

jPortable has been installed to PortableApps > Common Files (good) but OO cannot see it as a JRE (bad)
I also copied the same installation to the tablet PortableApps drive, OO Java folder, opened OO options, tried to check for JREs and OO insisted there were none available?

Next step: uninstall OO, and reinstall.
Result: OO was unable to uninstall.

Tomorrow is another day... At least I have one working installation. Thank you for your help.

Plugin

jPortable is a Common Files plugin, so it won't show up as an icon in the PA.c Platform. It also requires a manual uninstall (opening Explorer and deleting the directory) due to this.

Not sure why the standard location isn't working for you. The Java directory within OO Portable is for folks that carry it as a single app, usually.

Glad at least one is working for now. Please update on any additional progress on the off chance someone else experiences the same issue.

I have now installed, and

I have now installed, and verified that everything is working on another removable drive, so it looks as if the problem is with the tablet itself (or Win 8.1). Since the RAM is limited, and the tablet is, putting it kindly, slow, it may just take longer than expected to find and confirm a JRE. With that in mind I have attempted to replicate the conditions on the PC which was used to install on the removable drives (JRE installed before jPortable, but eventually, both show up in the OO Java options box)

A quick test showed that OO on the tablet did not see the JRE installed directly from Oracle, so I am giving it l...o...n...g...e...r before considering whether hardware restrictions are interfering.
