Newest Portable Apps LibreOffice hangs at 50%

This is my first post so I just want to first say Hello Everyone and I have been using PortableApps for awhile now and for the most part I really like it. Thanks to all the People that work on this site and the apps.

Now onto the not so great part ......

The newest version of LibreOffice hangs at 50% and will not finish install. Not sure why or what I can do about it but I use LibreOffice often enough that I kinda need this to work again.

If this is a known issue with a solution please reply with a link to the solution thread. I did a search and the only similar one I found was for a version/language different then the Current English Version.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

- Regards

** EDIT: If this wont be fixed in the near future can someone suggest an app/program that will allow Me to, at the very least, view the .odt files so that I can view the information I have saved from the previous version?

Drive?

This would most likely be a drive issue. Have you tried checking your drive for errors? Have enough space? Have you tried just installing it to your Desktop temporarily to see if anything else is interfering?

Hey John!

Hey John!

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure of what caused this issue but I fixed this problem. What I did was copy my created documents from the drive to my pc drive then completely uninstalled LibreOffice from my USB Drive then restarted my computer (just an extra precaution) then reinstalled the newest version of LibreOffice using the portable apps installer copied back my created documents and so far everything works as expected.

Also not sure if You remember talking to Me or not but have You consider implementing the "Cancel Install" option for apps that are hung/frozen yet? Also for multiple que'd app installs canceling the hung app would then start to install the next app in que?

I thought I fixed this .......

So I thought I fixed this because I was able to download and install a new copy of LibreOffice but today I started up PortableApps and it says there is an update for LibreOffice once again so I try to update it and it once again hangs at 50% forever.

Is this going to be an issue with every new release of LibreOffice and should I just find a new program or can this be fixed?

Also canceling the hung install is still not an option so I still dont know how to safely cancel it without risking corruption to my drive.

- Thanks!

Still a problem and still no cancel option ..........

The Libre Office still doesnt install properly with Portable Apps. Also the cancel install option is still not an option.

How can I safely cancel an install without risking hurting my USB drive? Can't Portable Apps update its install process to include a cancel install for issues such as a hung install?

This is a serious issue in my opinion as I have information on my usb that I do not want corrupted because of a bad/hung install.

Please tell Me there is a fix in the works for adding a cancel option?

- Regards

Drive

As mentioned above, this is likely an issue with your drive. As a large app, it sounds like your drive is simply overheating which is then causing performance to go down to basically nil.

NSIS, which the PA.c Installer is based on, doesn't support clean cancelling by default, so coding it would be quite a bit of work.

Well ...

"NSIS, which the PA.c Installer is based on, doesn't support clean cancelling by default, so coding it would be quite a bit of work."

Well John ..... "Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!" Smile

Surely You can see the benefit of having a cancel button? Is it possible to have the program install into a temp folder or into RAM and upon successful install be moved to the actual final install folder?

Furthermore not a drive issue as it only happens with LibreOffice (as far as I remember) and it is a Brand Name "Class 10" USB Drive 3.0. I also sometimes run this drive for a weekend straight while away as it is set as my video recording drive 24/7 read and writes with no errors.

*** Most importantly ... How to safely cancel a hung install without risk to the USB drive?

- Keep up the good work John and PA Team.

I still need to know the answer to this question .......

"How to safely cancel a hung install without risk to the USB drive?" because sometimes I still get a hung install.

New Drive

As stated above, I highly suggest you get a new drive. If this only happens on this particular drive, you should not be using it long-term. It is likely overheating. While it may not overheat with scratch files or other large files, LibreOffice and OpenOffice have a tendency of exposing dying drives due to the sheer number of files, over 18,000 with a full install.

It is unlikely there will be a cancel button anytime in the near future.

This is my issue - it's fried

This is my issue - it's fried two of my old (1 year and 3 year) USB drives and is now hung on a 45 minute old, brand new, just opened drive - it's NOT the USB.

The problem seems to be with

The problem seems to be with using the PA platform to install it - I have only been using the actual PA app for about a week but I continuously run into issues with it and won't be using it anymore.

Anyway, I can install all of them via a download from the apps page on the PA site, but any of the drives (USB 2.0 and 3.1) I try to install the program on via the PA platform itself results in a fail. 3 of the 5 of the drives I tried to install it on are in permanent write protected state - regedit, diskmgmt, and cmd won't remove the write protection either. If you get lucky and you don't have much in the way of important things on your USB, you can save it from WP purgatory if you format it while the install is hung.

Those are the only two workarounds I have found.

I should note, one of my older (3 years, 16GB) USB drives and a brand new 128GB 3.1 USB identical to the one that fried earlier were both great successes in the office install without using the PA installer.

Same Install Process

Whether you install via the platform or the installer directly, the installer itself is handling the install and it's the same install process. When you add a new app or update via the platform, it downloads the app from us to your TEMP directory and then runs it in silent mode feeding it the install location. The files copies and the order they're written is exactly the same in both instances. In neither case are any files adjusted in terms of permissions or locking. The code is open source and you can examine it yourself.

Files being 'locked' or unable to delete occurs when errors happen on a drive. These can be due to a drive failing, due to a USB port failing, due to a drive overheating, or due to a USB port over heating on the hardware side. On the software side, it's usually malware of some sort. Overheating can occur regardless of drive age, size, manufacturer, or price. The drive's controller is stressed most with LibreOffice. More so than any other app, due to the fact that it contains 18,499 files in 1,759 folders. Copying a 10GB zip is far easier on the drive than that number of files, even though it's only 1.1GB.

I'd suggest installing the platform locally to your Desktop directory and then installing LibreOffice via the platform. If it works fine, it's your port or drives. If it doesn't, check your PC for issues. You can also try using your new drive on another PC and trying the install/update that way to see if it is PC-specific or drive-specific.

My Experiance

@robertcampbell, @John T. Haller, @babyshrimps: I stumbled upon this thread while searching for something else. I had the same issue (LibreOffice install hung at 50%) while installing on my hard drive - "D:\". The power-off - restart was the only way to clear the hang. A search found that LO had left files in "C:\Users\FKlus\Roaming". Deleting that allowed clean installs.

My current Version: 7.1.5.2 (x86) / LibreOffice Community on Windows 10.0 is on "D:\PortableApps" - ver 18.0.1 LibreOffice and my documents are inside this directory (folder). I copy this to my USB drive (for use on another machine) and sticks for backup. I hope this helps you.
