LibreOffice Portable Still Version 7.1.6 Won't Launch

OS = Windows 7 Pro. SP1 x64

I just downloaded and installed LibreOffice Still using this paf file: LibreOfficePortablePrevious_7.1.6_MultilingualStandard.paf.exe

I just launched the paf file and did the install manually as I don't use PortableApp Platform.

The install was to update my earlier version of LibreOffice Still.

During the install two new folders were created ~PRESERVEDIRECTORY1 and ~PRESERVEDIRECTORY2. At the end of the install the folder ~PRESERVEDIRECTORY1 was deleted by the installer but the folder ~PRESERVEDIRECTORY2 was left in place.

In any case, I tried to a launch LibreOfficeWriterPortable.exe but it will not startup. I get the following error message from Windows:

Problem signature:

Thinking that the problem might have something to do with the folder ~PRESERVEDIRECTORY2 I then tried a completely fresh install of LibreOffice Still into a ramdisk. However, when I try to launch LibreOfficeWriterPortable.exe from there I get the same error as shown above. (So this has nothing to do with the ~PRESERVEDIRECTORY2 folder.)

I then download and installed to the ramdisk LibreOfficePortablePrevious_7.1.6_MultilingualAll.paf.exe and tried launching LibreOfficeWriterPortable.exe from there. The result was that I get the same error as shown above.

So as you can see there seems to be something wrong with LibreOffice Portable Still v7.1.6. So something I think you need to look into.

Working Fine Here

It's working fine here on my clean, fully updated Windows 7 x64 virtual machine with nothing installed into it. So, it's something specific to your machine. Please fully delete your existing LibreOffice Portable installations (save your Data directory from your main one if you'd like to preserve settings) as well as any local installs. Ensure Windows 7 is fully updated, close everything, clear out your TEMP directory, and then reboot. Then try reinstalling.

EDIT: Before you do that, what language are you using and are you removing extra languages? If English, please proceed with the above.

Decided to Install LibreOffice Community Fresh

Hi John,

Did as you said with the exception of updating Windows 7 (I keep a minimal system which I like). After the new install the result was 7.1.6 still produced the error noted above.

For now I've just installed LibreOffice Community Portable Fresh 7.2.1 which seems to be running just fine.

Don't know if I'll get the solution to the problem for LibreOffice Community Portable Still 7.1.6. I think I'll just wait until Still goes to a new version and try with that.

Thanks very much anyway for your quick response and suggestions -- greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'm writing 'LibreOffice Community' because while looking into this I discovered that LibreOffice changed to that name to distinguish the 'standard' edition from its 'Enterprise' edition. That said I'm not sure how that would go for naming from the point of view of PortableApps the following spring to mind:

LibreOffice Portable Community v7.2.1
LibreOffice Community v7.2.1 Portable
LibreOffice Community Portable v7.2.1

Not sure how you would deal with that if you were going for a name change to keep up with what LibreOffice are doing. Do you intend changing the name in the future?

EDIT: Just read your 'EDIT'. Yes I was installing in English. I did not remove any extra languages.

Suggest You Update

I'd highly suggest updating Windows 7 to include all patches within Windows Update. This won't affect your minimal install, but it will fix issues that you'll be encountering more often with apps. If apps test/support against Windows 7, they'll only test against a fully updated Windows 7 SP1 instance, generally with a fully updated IE9. This is the only way we test Windows 7 compatibility for PortableApps.com. You don't have to use IE9, of course, but it will update the Windows internet components that apps like the PA.c Platform use for the updater/app store which will let them work more securely.

Got a Fix Now

Hi John,

I hear what you're saying about updates, John, but I don't want to go down that route -- Microsoft and backdoor so-called 'telemetry' (aka outright spyware posing as part of an operating system).

I slept on this overnight and in the morning started searching the web for any information on problems with the skialo.dll related to LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Still 7.1.6.

I found a couple of hits, one of which was insightful, here:

https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/version-7-1-6-2-crashes-on-windows-10/67946/5

That post by "jmux" gave the necessary information to fix the problem. Note that the OP for that thread was using Windows 10 and yet was experiencing the same problem I was on Window 7. Specifically jmux said:

Faulting module path: …\skialo.dll

Skia is the graphics library used by Google Chrome. It doesn’t have bugfix releases, so LO basically just includes the current source code snapshot / milestone, with minimal own fixes. But LO can still run without it.

My guess is disabling Skia in Options >> LO >> View >> Graphics Output while in Safe Mode will fix the crashes. Occasionally updating your graphics driver might help too.

I was still in a situation where LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Still 7.1.6 wouldn't launch. So I launched the instance I have of LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Fresh 7.2.1 and in there disabled the Skia option, as described by jmux, then shut down LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Fresh 7.2.1.

Then I copied the LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Fresh 7.2.1 profile and overwrote the LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Still 7.1.6 profile with that. Then I launched LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Still 7.1.6 and it all went fine (now that the Skia option had been disabled in the profile).

So it would seem that the problem is some kind of bug that LibreOffice had for that version of 'Still' -- but the bug only affects some systems. I have maybe expressed that wrongly; it might be the case that bug actually accrues to the Google Chrome component that LibreOffice bundles into itself.

P.S. I tried to fix this by using LibreOffice Still in Safe Mode but be damned if I could get the setting for Skia disabled to stick in the profile -- hence my convoluted route of using LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Fresh 7.2.1 to fix a problem with LibreOfficePortableCommunity-Still 7.1.6.

Thanks again for your help.

Having similar problem with v7.1.6

I've been having a similar problems with Libre Office Portable Still v7.1.6 failing to launch.
I have an elderly Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 72 desktop PC with integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 chipset.
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 19043.1288 (21H1)
Having found this thread and similar ones at libreoffice.org, I tried running in safe mode (which worked) and disabling Skia in Options >> LO >> View >> Graphics Output but like @Abraxian found that this change made in safe mode didn't stick.

I then did a clean install of Libre Office Portable Still v7.0.5, which I happened still to have and this launched without problems. I made the same configuration change to disable Skia, which did stick, and then updated to v7.1.6, which did launch and still had Skia disabled.

It seems this is a known bug and will be fixed in v7.1.7. See the post by @EarnestAl in the thread https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/libreoffice-does-not-start-up-windows-10/2...

EarnestAl

Why have you re-opened an old question that does not relate to your version? You should have created a new question if you couldn’t find the answer.
In the meantime you could downgrade to 7.1.5.2 which should be fine.
Or once you have that version, turn off Skia in Tools > Options > LibreOffice > View and untick Use Skia for all rendering* and upgrade to 7.1.6.2.
A fix will be available in 7.1.7, see tdf#144598. Cheers, Al
