Windows x64, Firefox 78.15, copied on local system disk
I have quite strange situation: when I run Firefox from shortcut, it uses profile from ...\FirefoxPortableESR\Data\profile as expected, but when I press a link from email, it switches to %APPDATA%\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\profile which is definitely not what I want. Moreover, I see all that bunch of mozilla folders in %PROGRAMDATA%, %APPDATA%\Local, %APPDATA%\LocalLow and %APPDATA%\Roaming. So what's wrong with me/Mozilla/outer space etc.?

If you set it as default within Firefox, it sets Firefox itself as the associated browser, not Firefox Portable. You need to use a third party utility to set FirefoxPortable.exe as your default browser.

I have used this utility RegisterFP, which I found from https://portableapps.com/comment/240241#comment-240241 to register my Firefox Portable as the default browser. Works well.
Well, I ended up with direct registry edit and it works for me
