[Fixed] Opera/OperaGX App Folder Profile No Longer Being Deleted On Exit

OperaGX is no longer deleting the temporary profile in PortableApps\OperaGXPortable\App\OperaGX folder.

The presence of this undeleted Profile folder causes my OperaGX browser not load at startup until I manually delete it each time I need to use the browser.

The problem started with the last update.

A fresh install does not fix the problem.

Opera GX Profile

Hello,

I have the same profile problem.

In addition, the old profile is not taken over during the update.

Working Here

It works here without issue on Windows 10 x64 from a path with spaces. Both Opera and OperaGX. Please supply the additional information requested for bug reports including your OS version, 32 or 64-bit, full install path, etc. Also please state how you're launching the app.

Recap

The contents of the temporary Profile folder in PortableApps\OperaGXPortable\App\OperaGX\Profile disappear on exit, however, the Profile folder remains causing problems when I try to startup OperaGX. I have to manually delete the Profile folder before OperaGX will load.

I am using Win7 64bit at this time before reinstalling Win10.

Full Details

Please include the complete details. I need your full install path as well as how you are launching it (running OperaPortable.exe directly, running from the PA.c Platform, pinned to taskbar, file association, etc). I'm trying to reproduce this as it appears to be a bug in Opera itself causing the issue. As said, it works perfectly fine here, so I need to reproduce your setup exactly to try to reproduce the bug.

I am running OperaGXPortable

I am running OperaGXPortable.exe, not OperaPortable.exe. The problem did not exist until immediately installing the last OperaGXPortable update. I even tried re-installing OperaGXPortable again with the same results.

Third Time

For the third time, please supply the additional information or I can not help you. I still need the full path. It doesn't matter that it's OperaGXPortable.exe or OperaPortable.exe as Opera's bug appears to be in both versions.

This bug seems to be back,

This bug seems to be back,

OperGXPortable installed to E:\PortableApps\OperaGXPortable

version LVL3 build 81.0.4196.61

Tried the suggested workaround, but no dice, furthermore, I used to be able to open a site with OperaGX already running by calling
E:\PortableApps\OperaGXPortable\App\OperaGX\Launcher.exe with the url as argument, this now just launches a new instance with a seemingly new profile
if instead calling E:\PortableApps\OperaGXPortable\OperaGXPortable.exe specifying the url as argument the already running instance tries to open the full url prepended with file://

After removing this version and redownloading it from within PortableApps menu "Get More Apps..." it downloaded LVL3 80.0.4170.91 ???

Well, My Issue was - Profile disappeared... but..!

OS: Windows 10, 10.0.19043.1348 (21H1)
Arch: X64
RAM: 16 GB
PAF: 19.1
PAF folder: D:\PortableApps
OPERA's path: D:\PortableApps\PortableApps\OperaPortable
Opera's arch: I386 (32-bit) image [By Process Hacker]

Action: Opera was updated to 81.0.4196.37 version through PAF Platform.

Once updated, I launched Opera, but the whole session (Windows x tabs, sync) was gone. I tried three more times, but nothing changed.

Checking the content of folder %OPERA-PAF%\DATA\PROFILE, all of the files and folder appeared a recently created and modified (Timestamp at just after the updated and then app launching).
Then I decided delete the "profile" content and try to recover the 2 Windows and almost 50 tabs in them through the Opera's account synchronization feature, but when deleting the files and folder, noticed that Windows was deleting a "3GB folder". I canceled the "delete process".
The folder that was being deleted with a lot of data was"%OPERA's-PAF%\DATA\PROFILE\data". It was a surprise that was a Opera's profile folder. Sadly some profile's files were deleted, but mostly the Profile's folder weren't.
Moving the content of "%OPERA's-PAF%\DATA\PROFILE\data" to "%OPERA's-PAF%\DATA\PROFILE", then launching Opera, was possible recover the Windows x tabs that I was using, but (obviously) not the session's state (Sync, cookies, etc...).

Closing Opera, then Opening it back, the session was correctly brought back, only was needed configure the Opera's synchronization again.

Fixed in Rev 3

This is fixed in the Rev 3 I just posted. If you manually moved your files from profile\data, you'll need to move them back. If you didn't, it'll pick up your existing profile where you left off.

Maybe temporary solution

OS: Windows 10 x64 (ver. 21H1, OS build: 19043.1348)
Opera GX Portable (ver. LVL3 (core: 80.0.4170.91))

I had the same issue, after latest update when I tried to launch Opera GX it showed me the "Duplicate profile found" error. Delete App/OperaGX/profile, it works again. But when I close the app, then launch it, "Duplicate profile found" error again.
After brief search and troubleshooting I found a workaround.
I wrote 2 lines to the App/Appinfo/Laucher/OperaGXPortable.ini:
[DirectoriesCleanupForce]
1=%PAL:AppDir%\OperaGX\profile

Now it works like it should: my profile is safe and App/OperaGX/profile folder is disappearing when Opera GX closes.

Hope this helps another people.

After updating manually using

After updating manually using the .paf file to Opera GX 82.0.4227.25, this error occurred again. After deleting the temporary profile and adding the 2 lines as per comment https://portableapps.com/comment/248339#comment-248339, Opera GX can start and close without any error on subsequent start up and close.

Don't Associate Opera

Opera Portable no longer creates or uses a profile within the OperaPortable\App\Opera directory during use or upgrades. This will be created if you set Opera itself as your default browser, however. You must manually set OperaPortable.exe as your default browser using a third party utility or by editing the registry to use it as your default browser.

OperaGX is not my default

OperaGX is not my default browser. Portableapps.com is synced through OneDrive Personal.

The empty profile\data directory occurred again in PortableApps\OperaGXPortable\App\OperaGX recently. When I went through this steps:

1) Use on laptop
a) after I upgraded, I had the empty App\OperaGX\Profile\Data directory
b) delete this empy directory in Angel
c) added the https://portableapps.com/comment/248339#comment-248339 workaround and it works perfectly on my laptop

2) Use on desktop
d) when I next used OperaGX on another computer, with OneDrive reporting all is sync, the empty from a) is present
e) I deleted the empty App\OperaGX\Profile\Data and all is well
f) I didn't need to add the workaround as it was already sync

3) Use on laptop again
g) the empty App\OperaGX\Profile\Data is back
h) again, after deleting the empty App\OperaGX\Profile\Data, OperaGX launches normally without any issues

At the moment, I am suspecting it is some interplay between OneDrive and this directory or empty directory in general.

Right now, it's just a minor issue, with a simple manual workaround. Recording my experience here, to inform that if other users encounter this same issue, they are not alone.

I'll put this as a very low priority issue, a nuisance but not a deal breaker in continuing to use PA.c

Fixed in 82.0.4227.50 Rev 2

This is fixed in Opera GX, Portable Edition 82.0.4227.50 Rev 2. I'd inadvertently included some of the Opera settings unmodified so they weren't working with OperaGX with the alternate directory name. Sorry about that. You'll need to manually move your profile one last time.
