[Added] Different taskbar icons for PortableApps

Hello! and happy end of the year! Smile

I am experimenting with the simultaneous installation of different PortableApps environments.

In general it works as I want except for a few hiccups. The most annoying drawback is not having different icons in the taskbar for each PortableApps environment. Even if they were just variations of the official icon (e.g.; different colors).

Does anyone know how to modify the icon of a PortableApps environment?

Thanks in advance!

DJuego

PS: It seems that it is not possible to attach images for illustration purposes. Anyway, is it legal to link to images stored in image repositories (imgur)?

Awesome, will be useful for users who have different portableapps.com in use, each for different purposes.

Thanks!

Woah!

Hey guys! What John T. Haller offers is exactly what I was requesting for the reason Dominic Tey describes.

Thank you, John T. Haller!!

20 Beta 1

This feature is in 20 Beta 1 on the Theme tab in Options. It'll be launched in stable next week.

Small suggestion

The platform looks nicer now, but I want to suggest something.
To include all those new icons within the Start.exe file.. Right now, it's only including the default gray icon.
Would be as useful as this new multi-icon feature, for people using several shortcuts. Easier for them to change icons from the Start.exe file itself, instead of searching where the colored icons are stored.

Not As Necessary

It's not as necessary as it's not a huge effort to manually select it and you only need to do it once. Shortcuts you can name as you'd like as well. Running platforms were the issue for folks.

Of course, I have no problems

Of course, I have no problems, but it will look much better if (of course) it doesn't require too much work/time.
And/or, it may be added to the Possible Future Features list.

Size

It'll increase Start.exe by about 1MB to duplicate the icons from PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Graphics\TaskbarIcons for a feature that'll be used by less than 1% of users to save a mild inconvenience of clicking browse to select the icon from there, which takes less than 10 seconds. If it were something done more regularly or within the platform proper, that would be a different story.

Mea culpa

Seems logical, I was seeing it from a different point of view. Thanks for the explanation and sorry for the annoyance Sorry

Thank you, another with white background?

Thank you, thank you, thank you John for the task bar icons I first asked about in 2008 and then again in 2012 - all good things come to those that wait!

I am pleased there is at least one coloured arrow on a white background, this makes it more visible on my black task bar.

I would love to have at least one more with a white background, preferably the red one (so it’s the same icon as on the top left of PortableApps.com web site header)

BTW I'm ondering why in the pull-down selector they are named with both colours the same, e.g purple/purple for a white arrow on a purple background?

Translation, Not Planned

The colors are the localized and then the file name with a slash. For English, it's the same duplicated. For Spanish, it shows as: Morado / Purple. This is due to a technical limitation at present.

The white one is just because that's the only way to do white. I debated between black and gray for the arrow. Not sure what I'll settle on still. There are no plans for more colors now. The website icon doesn't have a red arrow. It's a transparent PNG and the red is the background of the website header. You can't do that with icons in Windows otherwise I would.

Thanks for the explanation. I

Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate you don’t want do any more on this.

However I would like the icons to stand out more on a dark taskbar by having a white background and a coloured arrow and I have found the platform doesn’t complain if I change the contents of the icon files so:

Q1 Is there any problem with me replacing a couple of the icon files with ones where I have moved the colour to the arrow? (except of course it will get overwritten on platform update)

Q2. Do the taskbar icon files need all the different sizes? Just 16x16 - 32 displays ok for me.

Will Be, High DPI

The icons will eventually be locked to the set included. Using the standard colors (to match the default theme) on a white background looks jarring and kinda awful to me. So, it's unlikely I'll look into this further. Plus, I don't want to do additional ones as they'll require more translations.

The additional sizes are used on high DPI displays.

Disappointing

Far from jarring coloured arrows on a white background make the icons really stand out in my black notification area (I hide the PA task bar button).

I had hoped for a red icon that looks like the not-icon graphic on PA.c web site banner, i.e a red arrow on a white background for my red-themed PAM in my VeraCrypt volume on my flash drive with Keepass, T’bird and GnuCash.

I had hoped for a silver arrow on white for my silver-themed PAM on the root of the flash drive.

You have given us a black arrow on white (thanks) for my black-themed PAM on my D drive.

If you leave this icon unlocked or look for an extra user-defined icon in the folder I could have what I want without being dictated to.

BTW shouldn’t Options > Advanced > “Hide taskbar icon” be “Hide taskbar button”?
