Encryption for my thumb drive

Now that i have all of this personal data on my portable drive i would like to know if anyone is using any kind of software that will encrypt or password protect the data on it.

ive seen some tools that will encrypt the entire drive, but you couldnt use the drive on any other machine that has the source software installed on it to de crypt it.

i would like something that can run on the thumb drive that will always prompt for a password after you put the drive in and even timeout if no activity is detected incase you leave your drive in the computer.

any suggestions?

TrueCrypt

It's quite handy. I'm writing up a how-to on it.

http://www.truecrypt.org/

It is Windows 2000/XP only, though. So the encrypted part of your drive would be inaccessible on Windows 95/98/Me.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

But Truecrypt requires admin rights...

And these are not always available.

The folks over at Certainkey had a neat product called Ecto. It uses java, and requires only a java-enabled browser to work, effectively making it platform independant. Unfortunately they've abandoned the project.

Thumbs up for TrueCrypt

Excellent app, doesn't need installing to create/access virtual drives Smile

TrueCrypt detected in registry

After deciding to download TrueCrypt I read the User Guide.pdf
Under the Traveller Mode section it says,

After examining the registry file, it may be possible to tell that TrueCrypt was run on a Windows system even if it is run in traveller mode.

Is there any way to stop this from happening?

Registry update...

TrueCrypt's affect on the registry is not uncommon. It is a portable app similar to many others.

I'm a fan of Cryptainer LE

I'm a fan of Cryptainer LE but the UI needs a little... overhauling for people that load more than one volume at a time. But it's never given me any trouble. I'll look at the other options for something new.

Sometimes you need a little genius, and some duct tape.
