After the plugin updater updates a plugin, it's best to close Notepad++ again, wait for processes to disappear, then open Notepad++ Portable again. this was preserving settings, etc previously. Was this after you closed and then reopened it?

Once I pressed "Update" button there was an information displayed that the program would be shutdown to download and install the updated plugin. When the update was complete I launched NP++ again and noticed that the session was lost.
Did Notepad++ restart itself automatically, then you closed it, then you ran Notepad++Portable.exe after it was fully closed?

Yes. Once I clicked the "Update" button there was that warning message about necessity of closing NP++ in order to proceed with the update so I just clicked OK or something like that. Once the window with the progress bar was complete I once again clicked something like OK. Then I launched NP++ and it was empty - all the opened files/tabs were gone.
This is fixed in Notepad++ Portable 8.3.1. You may still reopen to a blank session after the Plugin Manager automatically restarts. Close Notepad++ wait a moment for all processes to close, then launch Notepad++Portable.exe again and your session should be restored.
