Install size

Hi all, hope I've posted this in the right place.

Been a user for a few years, and wanted to transfer my install from one stick to another.

Got my new stick, and thought I might cheat, and just copy across the whole install. Now, at this point, I check the install, and the apps folder is at least twice the size on the new stick as it is on the old stick. Realising I may have caused issues by copying instead of just installing from scratch, I then deleted everything, formatted the stick, and attempted to install properly - download the PortableApps installer, and install my apps one by one.

Only again, the apps folder is twice the size of the old stick.

Old stick about 14GB, new one is about 31GB. (as in the size of the portableapps folder. The sticks themselves are 128GB and 256GB respectively)

I'm pretty sure this is my blunder, happy to admit that, but what have I done wrong and how do I get out of it?

Thanks

Nik

Copying is Fine

Copying your whole install (Start.exe, Documents folder, PortableApps folder) from one location to another will work just fine. It should show as the same size on each. If you're worried about missing something, right click a folder and select Properties and look for the count of the number of files and folders.

Copying made it bigger! lolz

Ah, but the thing is, copying the 3 items you mention didn't result in the same size - it's more than double!

Files and Folders

The same applies. What are the files and folders numbers.

Note that whatever is going on has zero to do with our software. You're just using Explorer to copy files and folders.

Well, actually, as I said,

Well, actually, as I said, after copying, I went back, deleted all, formatted and then used the installer.

Same

Since the same thing happened in Explorer, that shows it's nothing to do with our software, since it occurred while you were just copying files. How are you checking the install size? In Explorer? If so, please post a screenshot of the Properties windows (you can post them on IMGUR and link here).

Software

Also, I'm not saying that it's necessarily your software, I'm just asking for help.

What about the number of

What about the number of files and folders are they similar or doubled or more? If the number of files and folders are the same, with a difference in install size, my thoughts are that the size reported is due to Size of Disk instead of total Size of all files and folders.

Good point. Yeah, so when I

Good point. Yeah, so when I tried to reinstall, I don't have as many apps installed, and yet there are more on the old stick, but less size on disk. So old has 75000 files, and a size of 14.8GB, and the new one has 31000 files, but a size on disk of 31.1GB!

Copied Twice

If you check your file count, you copied double the number of files. This usually happens when you copy your PortableApps directory and then copy it again inside itself.

Not copied twice

Well the file count isn't exactly double, which it would be if I'd copied twice. Also not sure how your 'copy twice' theory works when like I've said, I have tried this just using the PortableApps installer.

Anyway, I've narrowed it down to GIMP. When installed on the new drive, installed size comes out as 22GB. On the old drive, it's only 3GB or so once installed.

I was thinking maybe it's the brand, since the 2 sticks are different. (old one is Kingston, new one is SanDisk)

But I've formatted the stick before the last install, and it still does it...

Very Odd

That's very odd. GIMP is only 1.03GB and 22,381 files before being run. Do you have an absurd number of fonts on your local system or something like that? (GIMP will cache them)
