Starting a program from the menu or directly : Differences ?

Hello all,

does it make a difference to call a portable program via menu or directly ?

Thanks a lot

Helpful follow-up question

What's the difference between
- pinning a program by dragging the …Portable.exe to it, and
- pinning it using the platform right-click-on-app "Pin to Taskbar"?

To your question, I think you can find here in the forum that using a solitary (without platform) PortableApps app (= running the …Portable.exe) works, as they're built to work like that. A click on the platform menu link is just triggering that exe, that then handles things on its own.

So I assume that the Laucher

So I assume that the Laucher does no further magic during start or stop of the programs. Can someone confirm this ?

Many thanks and best regards,

Norbert

Pin via Platform

You should only pin portable apps that use two EXEs (FirefoxPortable.exe launching firefox.exe) via the PA.c Platform. It understands the layout and creates a custom link based on the app's ID. If you try to pin an app while it's running, you'll pin it running in local mode. If you try to drag FirefoxPortable.exe to the taskbar, it will pin but it will create a second icon while running since Windows doesn't understand multiple EXE apps by default.

Different behaviours

Running a program via the menu or running directly the PAF.exe file are (almost) the same thing.

X:\...\PortableApps\BalabolkaPortable\BalabolkaPortable.exe

Running the "sandboxed" app from its own subfolder will create another clone of that same app and may let some folders/files behind.

X:\...\PortableApps\BalabolkaPortable\App\Balabolka\Balabolka.exe

.

Similar, Differences

It is similar. There are a couple differences, though. The PA.c Platform will feed info to launched apps about the Documents, Music, and Pictures directories. At the moment, you can't customize those but you will be able to in a future release. If you have a platform specific TEMP directory on your device, that will also be passed to the apps you launch from the platform.
