[Closed] PortableApps problems including External Exception C0000006 error

Firstly ......hi guys... first posting hoping to get the PortableApps going

Secondly I cant see any forum dealing with errors and issues so i'm posting here. apologies if wrong locale

Down to the issues
1. I downloaded and started the install 36 hours ago and still not fully install the Apps selected (clicked on all apps).Beside the download/install being extremely slow... its compounded with inefficient long pauses waiting for "click to accept terms" on random apps... sitting there for hours just clicking is not possible, so while AFK it sits there doing nothing till restarted with user input (other Pensuites do not ask for this user input till after installed and at the apps first opening)

2. The Download /install "froze" at 291 or 363 apps and had reboot.

3. The portable-app is totally un-usable as it errors the moment i move the mouse over the window bringing up External Exception C0000006 error and this is road block requiring a solution before can continue. Its related to Portable-app application issue as it occurs without even being able to access any installed apps.

Note i am installing/testing on a windows XP service pack 3

I have searched and seen this error in other posts with no solution supplied i'm hoping i can get help here.

I currently use "other" Pen Suites so am familiar with expected operations, but seeing such good reports on Portable-apps was hoping to migrate to this platform.

Icon load memory leak

There's a small memory leak in the icon loading routine in the platform. Installing all the apps at once will trigger it as it results in about 60,000 icon loads due to its current inefficient refresh procedure. You can close it in task manager and it shouldn't recur.

We're working on moving the EULA agreements to the beginning for all apps for convenience. Not showing them would be a violation of the copyright agreements we have with publishers.

We're also working on a more efficient refresh setup with caching.

Sorry for the initial hiccups. I hope your experience is otherwise unencumbered by issues.

Is all good and the closing in task manager... perfect... my bad for not rebooting and retrying.. that would fixed it too

The EULA i understand the legal aspect of showing, i was just suggesting it only show at the start of the app.... OR another idea maybe a small pop up at the beginning of the process...(like in android multiple updates in play store) im no expert... so using a just customer logic... not tech logic..lol

I know I did the "hardest/stressed" install so not upset about hiccups..i pushed the envelope..

ill now try and complete the remainder install.

EULA, leak fixes, etc

The EULA has to be done at install. Doing it on start of the app would violate our agreements with many publishers who require it before the app is installed. I think the rationale might be that once you "install" you have access to the app and the app's components, but don't quote me on that. If you see someone bundling freeware apps in such a way that the EULA is not shown prior to install/extract, it's likely being done illegally.

Moving the agreements to the beginning of the install process will alleviate the interruption aspect. It's partially complete but not in beta yet. You pick the apps you're going to install, click next, then agree to the EULAs, then click next, then the full download and install process continues uninterrupted, only showing errors at the end. We already ensure that you see the EULAs only once for each version of it. The platform tracks internally when an EULA has changed and the installer tracks whether you agreed to that version yet. So, you may occasionally see an EULA for an app when you update it if it's changed. We'll be moving all of those to the beginning of the update process as well.

As for the stressing, the app packages are already informing the platform which specific app was updated. It's just that the platform doesn't yet act on that specifically... instead doing the slow refresh of all apps. An upcoming release of the platform will only refresh each specific app when it is installed or updated, making the platform faster and causing less icon loading.

The leak is due to it using the ICO icon files as opposed to the PNG files included with each app. The only reason that's being done is due to an older bug within WINE that causes black boxes around the icons when the platform is running within WINE on Ubuntu, MacOS, etc. We'll be having that fixed shortly as well. And the ICO memory leak is likely due to using an older version of our development environment Delphi. We're upgrading to the current release for the next major platform version now that we've ensured it is still working with Windows XP even though it is not listed as officially supported (though it does drop Windows 2000 support).

PortableApps External Exception C0000006 error

I've been a long-time user of the PortableApps (PA) platform & this "PortableApps External Exception C0000006 error" still occurs today in October 2022 using Windows 11. If I use Task Manager to 'Go to Details' & then choose 'Close Process Tree' to restart PA without a system reboot, after about an hour or so of restarting & the continued use of PA, an "Aww Snap BSOD" occurs.

BSOD = Other Issues

If you're experiencing a BSOD, you've got other issues that should be solved. In modern Windows, it's impossible for a user space app to crash Windows without an underlying issue. Generally, it's the graphics driver, so I'd recommend ensuring that is up to date. Underlying Issue

There has to be either an underlying issue in one of your drivers or an unpatched Windows kernel issue if you're using a very outdated version of Windows for this to be possible. I've run the platform daily since the day it was created and have never seen a BSOD based on it, for instance. I'd recommend looking at commonalities within the machines. Or if it's a drive issue (electrical issues in a drive can easily trigger a BSOD).

Error starting application

I create in VMware portableApps "SysGauge Ultimate v.8.8.16" application. When i run it after snapshot in VMware all is OK. But when i run it on physical machine i get an error "Unable to validate product license (ERR:2645). Help me please.
