PDF-XChange is not freeware????

I installed the 'PDF-XChange Editor Portable (Freeware) - PDF editor and viewer' program. I was able to edit several PDFs. However, after the 5th or 6th document, the saved document had the logo on each page, saying I needed to purchase the program, $56.
Is this freeware or not???

Freeware

Yes, it is freeware, with a premium upgrade option. If it was only usable for a period of time it would be trialware (which we don't release), but it has core features that are available indefinitely without payment while a small handful of features require the paid upgrade.

We have other apps that also offer free forever functionality with some features hidden behind a paywall.

If you check the PDF-XChange page there is a way to hide all of the premium features so you'd never even know they are there.

Only When Licensed/Paid Feature Is Used

According to the publisher, it is freeware. The watermark only appears when a licensed/paid feature is used. See How do I Remove Demo stamps from my Document, and why are they there? and product comparison chart.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
