Firefox can't update anymore

Hi, since version 109, FF started to have problems with the auto update feature.
If I go to About menu entry, FF tries to check for updates online and, after a while, it replies with this message: "Failed to check for updates".

Strange thing: when I open FF the symbol for a new update availability appears on the command bar option button (a green circle over the three lines). But if I follow the advise, FF offers to download the new version to manually update it.

I tried to download two new versions (109.1 and 110) and update the browser manually. That means install the paf file and then copy my Data folder content where it has to be in the new installation folder.
The browser works with no issue, the version is regularly updated, but it remains incapable of checking for updates.

Up to 109 everything worked well. What's wrong with it now?

Thanks

Working Here

It's working here in both 32-bit and 64-bit under Windows 7 and 10. I installed 109.0.1 and it updated to 110 without issue. Try installing a fresh copy of Firefox Portable 109.0.1 temporarily to your Desktop directory without copying your data in and see if it can update. If it can, then it's an issue with your settings/profile. If it can't, then it's something on the PC.

Side note: You don't need to copy your files around and install new copies to upgrade. You can follow these steps: https://portableapps.com/support/portable_app#upgrading

Hi, I have the same problem.

Hi, I have the same problem. The "auto update checkbox" gets always untickled after restarting firefox
I tried FF 111 back to FF 104

FF 100 - auto update working - checkbox is checked after update to FF 111
FF 100.0.2 - also working
FF 101 - not working - checkbox unchecked.

edit: This files has to be deleted
"Firefox\App\DefaultData\settings\update-config.json"

Me again.

Me again.
Today I tried to update FF to 112 with the internal auto update tool but again "Failed to check for updates".

Then I tried (again) to follow your suggestion:
- downloaded a fresh copy from PA (v 112);
- installed from the new package to have an empty Data folder;
- run the new installation;
- tested for a new update and get the error.

Interesting thing.
Since you said that if a fresh installation is bugged, it could be something caused by my PC, I tested FF on all my PCs. I've got one Win11 and three Win10. The wrong behaviour is the same on every single machine. My PCs are all configured the same way, with the same programs installed, but are completely different machines and the issue is always there.

Working Here On Windows 7, 10, 11

I did fresh installs of Firefox Portable 111.0.1 on Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 10 32-bit, Windows 10 64-bit, and Windows 11. In all 5 instances, I started it up, checked Help - About. It said there was an update available. I clicked Update. It updated. I had it restart Firefox. These were all clean virtual machines of Windows with no changes other than being updated and having the VirtualBox bits installed.

If all your PCs are configured the same way, it's worth figuring out what it is that's interfering with Firefox's updater. We don't make any changes to Firefox itself or its updater within the portable package. We also don't support issues with the base app.

Ok finally you put me in the right path.
I tried to install the official Firefox package (not portable) and it has the same issue.
I'll report it to the Firefox support.
